J U DG ES STAND Br CHARLES HATT0N ARLINGTON - PARK, Arlington Heights, HI., June 26.— Ben Lind-heimer, whose programs have made Chicago the summer turf capital, today expressed his satisfaction with the tone and quality of this much of the .Arlington meet. And if we read the signs and portents correctly, the renewals of the Classic Arlington Handicap, Futurity and Lassie will develop some of the most important racing of the 1953 season. The sport this week end will be notable for a renewal of the Equipoise Mile, a race which may be expected with some confidence to produce a rival or two for Tom Fool in the 5,000 Arlington Handicap. Hill Gail ran his way into favoritism for this fixture when he carried 128 pounds to a new course record of 1:08% for six furlongs as the meeting opened. And if the 1952 Derby winner can bring it off, Calumet will have retired the Whitney Trophy. It is hoped the going remains fast, for it is of academic interest that Mrs. Markeys colt has the same impost Equi- poise carried when he established his challenging track I record of 1:34% here as long ago as 1932, "Good" as Hill ■ Gail is at present, it is conceivable he will make a strong assault on this 20-year-old standard. The son of Bull Lea must concede from 12 to 24 pounds to his 15 rivals. These include four from the Hasty House and Trotsek strings, among them Oil Capitol and the recent Lincoln winner, Ruhe. Perhaps the strategy will be one of surrounding the field.. The stake this week end honors one of the most popular entertainers ever to have appeared at Arlington Park. Matter of fact, we are not at all sure we have seen a better performer than was "The Chocolate Soldier." As Major Louie Beard once remarked to us, "He is one horse who never in his life chucked out the bit," which is the equine equivalent of throwing in the towel. Ekkys Mile Challenges Arlington Field Reineman May Offer First Royal Chargers Reuben Developing Turf Course Talent Dixiana Seeking Another Lassie Renewal A lot of races have run under the wire here since 32, but none so scintilating as Equipoises mile. AAA Howard Reineman may be the first U. S. horse huckster to have yearling progeny of Royal Charger on offer. He is negotiating in Ireland for weanlings by that handsome red stallion, or mares in foal to him. Happy Laughters successes in the 1,000 Guineas and the Coronation at Ascot certainly have not done anything to depreciate Royal Charger since his sale to Mayer, McCarthy and Combs. It will be interesting to note how the Royal Chargers are, received by patrons of the American yearling market. JlfJs represented in contemporary racing nere by Royal Sererfade, who was top drawer as a sprinter in England before his importation. Mention of the yearling market reminds us that Humphrey Finney was a recent Arlington visitor, full of enthusiasm for the Spa sales and details of the remodelled pavilion. We gather it is going to look very smart and cozy, and that Finney finds the market unbelievably strong. According to the schedule the Saratoga consignments will be offered in five sessions beginning August 10. The Aga and The Aly shall have the first tug at U. S. bidders purse strings, their French and Irish yearlings going on the block on opening night. As in the instance of our own Calumet Farm, it is assumed that when The Aga places horses on the block they are culls. And yet who is so omniscient he can be sure what the future holds for a yearling thoroughbred? Apart from the luck involved, there is the circumstance that the Indian potentate hopes to establish an American market. In order to achieve this, he must sell colts and fillies worth the money. AAA Allie Reuben is making rather an interesting experiment. Several days ago at Red Bank he purchased the three-year-old brown gelding Stan from William Read of England with a view of campaigning him in turf course competition. Stan won six races on the Tight Little Isle last season and has never started in America. "As a gelding he is ineligible for many races across the Atlantic," Reuben observes "and I suppose that was a consideration in the decision to sell him here. He is a sound, big animal, standing 16 hands, and I am hopeful that by racing him on the grass we can keep him in good condition. Personally I feel that the reason so many imported horses seem to go wrong here is because of the difference in the going." Stanjnay appear soon in a turf course sprint at Arlington Park. And if his form warrants he is to be made eligible for stakes on the grass over East this fall. He is by the Fairway stallion, Kingsway, who is the sire also of Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs crack handicapper, Royal Vale. Reuben, incidentally, is as pleased as you might guess with old Ruhes form, and he tells us that the Lincoln Handicap winner also is to concentrate on grass racing. He was runner-up to Wilwyn in the Laurels Washington, D. C, International last autumn. AAA Dixiana has reared somewhat more than its share of good fillies and may have a worthwhile candidate for the Lassie again this summer in Ladykin, who earned her diploma, as the cliche goes, ." l her first start here the other day. She was ridden by Arcaro, which was just as well, for she was inclined to be a little green and insouciant and the experienced Natchez Girl thrust her neck in front at the furlong pole, whereupon Arcaro lit into her left- Continued on Page Forty-Three I JUDGES STAND By CHARLES HATTON Continued from Page Fifty-Two handed and she came again. Ladykin is by Spy Song, who, in turn,. is out of Mata Hari, with whom Charley Fisher won a Lassie about 20 years ago. Miss Mary Fisher won it last summer with another Spy Song called Fulvous. Ladykin has been made eligible also for the Pollyanna to be presented on July 3. Up to now racing in the Midlands has developed no such filly as Evening Out or Incidentally, but this is not to imply there is none of comparable class in the area. Matter of fact, there was a filly on the also-eligible list for Ladykins race who did not get to start that has profoundly impressed the dockers. We. refer to Mrs. Gene Markeys Miz Clementine, a broad beamed bay sister to Two Lea and Twosy. Advance notices she is something special have been issued ever since Keene-land. Ben Jones is very fond of her. AAA Turf ana: Ben Lindheimer has been in daily attendance at Arlington, entertaining Governor Stratton_ppening day. Looks fitter than in many months. . . . Hill Gail inclines to be impetuous and wears a Citation overcheck. His stablemate, Mark-Ye-Well, an equine intellectual, is one Calumet who trains in a a light, open-faced bridle. . . . Grecian Queen was so diminutive as a yearling she almost was not trained at all, and it was originally intended reserving her for breeding. . . . Gay Time does not now appear an asset for the English National Stud. Has failed ignominously as, a four-year-old. ... If you are wondering about it, Company Bs sire, Valdina Lamar, is by Teddys Comet, out of the good producer, Lady Marlboro. . . . A. G. Vanderbilt himself trained Geisha .for a time. . . . Frank Ashley again is describing Arlington races over the p.a. system, returning after an absence of two seasons, before which he called them here 17 years. . . . Jacodema is a fugitive from the stud.
