Hill Hill Gail Gail in in Equipoise Equipoise Mile; Mile; Carter Carter Will Will Test Test Tom Tom Fool Fool Carries 135 Pounds For Seven Furlongs Gives Squared Away Twelve, First Glance and Dark Peter Fifteen Each at Aqueduct By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 26.— Greentree Stables Tom Fool will attempt to concede from 13 to 27 pounds to nine stakes-winning rivals tomorrow, when he picks up 135 pounds in the 55th running of the 0,000 Carter Handicap at seven furlongs. This is three pounds more than any horse has ever carried successfully in this stake and it is the same burden under which the mighty Roseben finished second to Glorifier back in 1907. Despite the impost, Tom Fool will rule a solid choice with the week-end throng at this Rockaway Boulevard course. The son of Menow has won all four of his starts this year and carried 130 in the Joe H. Palmer and Metropolitan handicaps and 128 in the Suburban, in which he stepped, the mile and a quarter in 2:00%, stepping the fastest 10 furlongs ever seen on Long Island with the exception £ Whisk Broom H.s disputed 2:00. ; It requires a versatile thoroughbred, drop back from a mile and a quarter seven furlongs in top company, but Tom Fool has displayed both speed and stamina in abundance since he was the leading juvenile two seasons ago. However, it is, in one respect, more difficult to win a major handicap at seven furlongs under 135 pounds than to carry that burden an additional three furlongs, for the simple reason that there are more good sprinters than good stayers. Trained Brilliantly at Jamaica Mrs. Jan Burkes Squared Away, who won the Roseben Handicap on Belmonts straight course, then finished third in the Oceanport Cap at Monmouth, has trained brilliantly at Jamaica, appears the chief rival to the handicap champion tomorrow. The Piping Rock gelding, who was a beaten favorite in last years Carter, will be ridden by" Jimmy Nichols; while Ted Atkinson will be on Tom Fool or Northern Star, who has been entered as "rain insurance." Tom Fool will probably not start in the event of any considerable" amount of rain. Northern Star won last years Carter in a track record 1:22, but has not been able to find the winners circle since that startling performance. Alfred G. Vanderbilt has also named two for tomorrows test in First Glance, 120, and Continued on Page Three — — " — — c X- v • - Five Oppose Royal Vale in Sussex ♦ Tom Fool Facing Yeoman s Task Takes Up 135-Pound Burden, Giving Nine Rivals From 73 To 27 in Carter at Aqueduct Continued from Page One Indian Land, 116 pounds. Both appear dangerous at the weights, and both showed good form here last Saturday. First Glance, who was returning to action after several weeks, was a fast-finishing third behind Mrs. Alfred Roberts Eatontown and Har-borvale Stables Dark Peter at six furlongs. Indian Land was a close second to Flaunt in the Queens County Handicap at a mile and a sixteenth. First Glance has an adverse weight shift of three pounds in relation to Eatontown, 113, and Dark Peter, 120, but is expected to improve at least that much. He followed a similar race in the Paumonok by winning the Excelsior at Jamaica in the spring. In his race before the Queens County, Indian Land finished between Cinda and Squared Away in the Oceanport, beating the latter a length and a half while receiving nine pounds. He gets six tomorrow. Northern Star was another length and a half behind Squared Away in fourth pla e in that event, and a head before Eatontown, who is coming back from New Jersey to attempt to duplicate his Kingston Handicap upset. Eric Guerin on First Glance Eric Guerin will ride First Glance,, who had drawn the unfavorable outside post position, while no rider has been named as yet for Indian Land. W. B. Williams is slated to pilot Eatontown, who was ridden by Bennie Green in his last triumph. Dark Peter, who will be ridden by Hank Moreno, had no apparent excuse when beaten by Eatontown in the Kingston, but was wearing that veteran down at the end of the shorter race. The competition in this edition of the Carter, which has almost always produced a thriller, doesnt end with those named, for F. Ambrose Clarks veteran Tea -Maker is in here with 117 pounds, Wool ford Farms almost equally venerable Delegate has 110, and the field is completed by Ogden Phipps Ancestor under 108. Tea-Maker had won his two previous starts before finishing a sluggish fourth behind Eatontown, Dark Peter and First Glance last Saturday. He drops half a dozen pounds, a shift of five pounds in relation to the first two and eight against First Glance. Delegate will be racing at his favorite distance and won his last at Belmont Park, but is more than a little shopworn. Ancestor set a sizzling pace in the Queens County and may have considerably-more than "nuisance value" tomorrow. Review of Past Winners When Charade wor the first Carter back in 1895, the year after Aqueduct opened, he netted Wl R. Jones a munificent 00. Despite inflation the 2,200 net to tomorrows winner, if all 10 start, represents a considerable increase. The Carter was doubled this year, having been a 5,000-added event since 1947, when Rippey won it under 112 pounds. That fine speedster finished second the next two years under 132 and 123 pounds, beaten by Gallorette and Better Self. The two topweight winners were the late Joseph E. Wideners Naturalist and Osmand, who carried 132 pounds each in 1919 and 1929. Among the other memorable winners were Beldame, Roseben, who scored with 129 the year before he failed under 135; Roamer, Old Rosebud, Sarazen, Silver Fox probably the best gray to race in this country prior to Native Dancer, King Saxon, Apache and Devil Diver. And now, the sentence the world has been waiting for: The only triple dead-heat in a stakes race in North American racing history occurred in 1944 when " the camera failed to separate Brownie, Bossuet and Wait A Bit. Grecian Queen Eyes New Castle DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 26.— Mrs Ben Whitakers Grecian Queen is scheduled to ai*rive on the local scene on Tuesday to receive final training for the closing-day 00,000 added New Castle Handicap, a fixture for fillies and mares. According to word received from Jimmy Conway, Grecian Queen will be accom-panied by a quartet of stablemates destined for campaigning during the final four days othe session. Rain Finally Comesto Fairmount FAIRMOUNT PARK, Collinsville, HI., June 26. — The first heavy rain in a month came this morning. To date the track has been fast for the first 26 days, which sets some sort of a record.
