His Duchess Gets Up for Neck Tally Gives Atkinson His ► Third Score of Day Ogden Phipps Racer Beats Tiny Request in Aqueducts Naiad; War Piper Graduates AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 26.— Ted Atkinson rode his third winner of the afternoon and finally hung one on Eric Guerin, who has been his nemesis at this meeting, when he got Ogden Phipps His Duchess up in the final yards of the featured Naiad Purse to score by a short neck over Ben F. Whitakers Tiny Request. Belair Studs La Perouse, coupled with the winner, was only aneck farther back and a head before John S. Phipps Spinning Top at the end of a hotly contested six furlongs. The James Fitzsimmpns-trained entry was favored by the majority in the crowd of 16,339 that turned out in delightful weather, paying .60. His Duchess, a daughter of Blenheim H. — Businesslike, thus a half-sister to Busanda and Auditing, was clocked in 1:12% as she scored her first victory of the year on the seventh attempt. Trainer Fitzsimmons was not present to saddle His Duchess or Prairie Chief, winner of the fifth, having been taken ill early in the afternoon. Atkinson had won the opener on Bicarb and the fourth race on War Piper, and his third score of His Duchess gave him the lead in the local jockey standings with seven winners at the meeting to six for Guerin. Half Mile Run in :45 His Duchess was first out of the gate in the Naiad, breaking from the inside stall, but Countess Jane, Miss Weesie and Tiny Request quickly surged up outside of her. Atkinson eased His Duchess away from the scorching pace, which saw the opening quarter run in :22% and the half in :45, dropping back a couple of lengths. Spinning Top was a distant fifth in the run to the far turn, folowed by La Perouse, while Bethsabe couldnt keep up. Tiny Request took command between the turns and came into the stretch a couple of lengths before Countess Jane, while Miss Weesie was a distant third. Atkinson took out with His Duchess at this point and went to work with his rhythmic whip. Tiny Request was far in front, however. Nearing the eighth pole, Guerin glanced back, rather confidently, but as His Duchess continued to gain and La Perouse and Spinning Top joined the contest, he looked again, this time in desperation. His Duchess was coming with a rush, followed closely by La Perouse and Spinning Top, while Tiny Request was staggering with fatigue and it was all Guerin could do to hold her together at the finish. In another stride, she would probably have been fourth, while His Duchess was going away. Brae Burn Farm unveiled a potential stakes colt in the fourth race in the person of War Piper, a rather small, but well-made son of War Admiral — Evening Tide, by Bull Dog, who was purchased from Coldstream Stud for 8,000. With Ted At-, kinson shaking his stick by his head passing the sixteenth pole, the chestnut colt scored by two and a half lengths over Wheatley Stables Alternative, S. BRYANT OTT — Trainer of Honey Please/ winner of the Geneva Purse at Arlington Park yesterday.
