On the Trot I Br MORBIE KUMLANSKY 1 Chicago Pacing Derby on Tonight Pacers Feature Supporting Race Shore Leave Makes Seasonal Bow MAYWOOD PARK, Maywood, HI., June 26. — The ,000 Chicago Pacing Derby, distance one mile, for free-for-all side- wheelers, promises to ■gttfe be one of the best JPPS||| races for the lateralis-- gaited horses of the ■lwW.JffHifc whole Chicagoland ;;WEPpjf§|M harness racing season. flFijnM Tne line-up in order of * lIlwB post Positions for the rfm.«H "Derby" tomorrow JfetfmlM niht is as follows: grB True Jay Dave Tad-jfc deo, Dale Wingay C. ■HBk 9k m F- Rumley , Chief Mite Jerry Neikirk, Gene Hayes Jack Beasley, Mr. Dean Virgil Butt, H. Since the drawing gave two horses gifted with lots of early speed the inside post positions, a rapid clip from the outset can be expected and that there will be no let-up in the pace, such horses as H. D. Hanover and Gene Hayes can be safely depended on. Chief Mite is holder of the track mark 2:01% at Hazel Parks five-furlong oval and Mr. Dean, who makes only his second start of the year, is credited with a half-mile mark of 2:02%. In the supporting feature, a field of seven pacers will start in a junior-free-for-all pace for a ,500 purse. Here, too, the locally-campaigned pacers — Gay Order, Athlone Ruler, Trusty Key, Moore Volo and Guy Ganonian — will face stern competition from two invaders, the four-year-old Warpath and the five-year-old Dominion Boy. Warpath, a son of Scotland — Pocahontas, thus a full brother to Indian Land, 1:59%, and owned by C. M. Saunders of Perrysburg, Ohio, as a three-year-old was driven by Billy Rouse, now a public trainer here, to five victories in ten starts. He improved, however, immensely over last year and won his first four starts at Hazel Park this spring. In his seasons debut Warpath met and defeated Gay Order in 2:03% and 2:04%, respectively. The only defeat Warpath suffered in five starts this year came at Northville Downs, Detroit on June 19, when he finished third to Dominion Boy and Hi-Los Starwa. Dominion Boy, same as Chief Mite, is trained by Jerry Neikirk and owned by Michael Ennis of St. Clair Shores, Mich. This Dominion Grattan stallion started eight times this year, won three times and also was second thrice. His fastest win time in 1953 was recorded May 28 at Hazel Park when he defeated, among others, Chief Mite and Ginnie Lee C. in 2 : 03 flat. Dominion Boy was a winner of his last start at Northville Downs in 2:03%, which is equivalent to the best time recorded this season at Maywood Park. Gay Order will have his work .cut out by these two speedsters, each one possessed of early foot, while the May-wood-owned Gay Order likes to come from behind. While there is only one trotting race on tomorrow nights program, almost all side-wheelers -that have distinguished themselves this year here by winning in fast time will be seen in action. It should be especially interesting to see how the three and four-year-olds like Kenneth_ Tryax, Hedrick Jr., Kings Ale, Lorraines Boy, Peter Belle, Czar Volo, Fred Scott and Victory Scott stack up against older rivals in their respective races. Shore Leave* a four-year-old filly by the Little Brown Jug winner, Ensign Hanover, makes her seasons bow tomor-" row night in the second race, a conditioned 23-22-class pace.. The filly will be driven by "Doc" Flanery, custodian of the immortal Greyhound 1:554 for owner E. J. Baker or St. unaries, a man who can rightfully boast that he owned more outstanding harness horses than anyone else in the world. Earl Roush regained the sole leadership in the drivers standings Wednesday night after he won with Speed Gail for owner Earl Pierce of Fort Wayne. Roush now has 23 wins, followed by Ralph Ayou with 22 victories and Clarence Curtis with 21 winners. Billy Rouse and Dee Stover are tied for fourth place with 18 wins each Dell Creed, the two-year-old filly owned by William Hufford of Lebanon, Ind., broke her maiden Wednesday night, driven by the Ohio teamster, Roy Riegle. Her time of 2:10% is the fastest for a juvenile at Maywood Park this year. The chestnut filly is the first of the get of Jimmy Creed to compete on the race track and in five starts was never worse than third. Her sire, Jimmy Creed, was one of the fastest two-year-old pacers in the history of harness racing and only bad post manners at two prevented him to go the mile in 2:00, pacing the mile in 2:00%. Later in his career, Jimmy "Creed fulfilled all promises, developing into one of the all-time, free-for-all pacing aces, setting world records on both half-mile and mile tracks and earnings over 08,000. His best half-mile track effort was a 2:01% mile at Saratoga, while the time of 2:09% for 1 1-16 miles at Maywood Park in July, ,1948 is still unsurpassed. . .Roy Riegle continues to be the hottest driver here. On Wednesday night, Roy made three starts, winning two of them and finishing second in the other race. His over-all record since coming here reads: Fourteen starts, eight wins, four seconds, and one third. . .Edgar Leonard drove another winner in the schooling races for two-year-olds. This time it was a brown colt, True Rudy, owned by Mrs. Eleanore James of Wheaton, who broke his maiden in 2:14%. |
