Ten Oppose Blacktype in Fourteenth Running of 4,000 Ascot Gold Cup Victory Plate Winner Has Some Fun, Windy, Hocotia To Beat in Two-Mile Test By RONALD KRANCER Staff Correspondent ASCOT PARK, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, May 28.— The 4,000 Ascot Gold Cup has attracted a field of 11 for its fourteenth running here Saturday afternoon and one of the largest crowds in the history of the local, plant is expected to be on hand to witness the semi-final program of the meeting. The 39-day session will come to a close with the running of Mondays Memorial Day holiday program and over the two-day racing period it is expected some 20,000 fans will have visited the track. Included in the eleven-horse line-up are several horses shipped in from other points. Two couplings are in-the two-mile local classic, with JG. E. Russell saddling Mrs. H. B. Masseys Picked and Leo Edwards Bee Air, and the L. W. Jennings Stable sending out Roseborough and Hiya-Sailor. The remainder of the field will line up in the following order: Paul Troutts Mo-tiger, Herbert R. Simpsons Windy, River Divide Farms Some Fun, Wilmer C. En-sors Hocotia, Mrs. Freddy Sharpes The Preem, George Bill, Jr.s Galoot, and Lily Ann Stables Blacktype. The Ascot Gold Cup has been built up from an ordinary overnight event with a 00 purse to its present high position under the guidance of managing director Henry Green. The Gold Cup conditions, Continued on Page Fifty-Two Ten Face Blacktype In Ascot Gold Cup Victory Plate Winner Has Some Fun, Windy, Hocotia To Beat in Twq-Mile Test - Continued from Page One which were written by Green, makes any horse eligible for the race that has started for a claiming price of ,500 or less since October 1. Blacktype, to be ridden by Tony Licata, will strive to become the third horse to win both the Gold Cup and Victory Plate. The gelded son of Market Wise, scored a brilliant four-length tally in last weeks Victory Plate at a mile and one-half and in so doing set a new track record of 2:33%. Blacktype was an easy winner and through the stretch run was improving his position. Last season Blacktype appeared a certain winner in both the Cup and Plate when on the backstretch, the second time around, . he propped and by the time that jockey Signey Cole could get him in full stride again the race was lost. In last weeks race, according to his rider, he did try to loaf twice, but Licata flicked his whip across his mounts ears and he kept about his business. Since Licata apparently has the know how to keep Blacktypes mind on his work and after .having not only won the Victory Plate, but also at Belmont Park before shipping here, it is expected that Blacktype will be the favorite in this event. Under the conditions of the Gold Cup he will be asked to carry 119 pounds as most of the others will. Some Pun finished second to Blacktype in last weeks Victory Plate after having been far back most of the trip. This son of- Some Chance will have a strong local following and will be seeking his second victory of the season. Some Pun won on May 11 at Suffolk Downs before making the trip to Ohio. Jockey Gene R. Martin will be astride the River Divide colorbearer as he was in his winning race in New England. Early in the week Some Pun suffered a minor training mishap, but apparently is in good condition once .again:* Some Fun will carry 119 pounds. Ran Seventh in Plate Bee An* and Picked will hold a strong hand. The latter was withdrawn from the Victory Plate, while Bee Arr turned in a rather disappointing race, winding up seventh under a 123-pound burden. He takes off four for the Gold Cup. Bee Arr has won three times this season, most recently while at Garden State and running for a 0,000 price tag. The other part of the entry won for ,500 while at Gulf-stream Park last March. Picked will carry 113 pounds in Saturdays engagement. Windy is the only member of this field that will be seeking his second Gold Cup, and after his performance of last Saturday would have to be accorded an excellent chance of duplicating his race in 1952s renewal. In last weeks contest after a rather slow beginning, Windy was up to gain third money, beaten four and one-quarter lengths. Last season Windy was the champion distance horse in this area, having scored decisive victories in Randall Parks Cuyahoga series and then shipped to Hazel Park where the gelding was once again nearly unbeatable in that tracks marathon events. Since Windy is a non-winner this year he will pick up 113 pounds. Trainer Prank Fitzgerald has named the tracks leading rider, Gail Parker, to handle Windy. Blum to Ride Hocotia Hocotia comes from Pimlico with excellent credentials and is to be ridden by apprentice Walter Blum, who was the leading "bug" rider last winter at Santa Anita. Hocotia has won his last three races, the most recent an overnight handicap in which the Elisor colorbearer bested Bone Dry by two and one-half lengths going a mile and three - sixteenths. Since an apprentice rider will be used, Hocotia will pick up 113 pounds. Motiger finished fourth to Blacktype last week. He was second at the furlong marker and then could not close any ground on the winner. Motiger was making his first start since Hialeah and may have needed the race. The Preem closed some ground in the Victory Plate, finishing fifth after being last most of the trip. The Preem was lightly regarded in that race going off at nearly 40 to 1. While at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans during the winter, The Preem looked good and could possibly provide an upset in the Gold Cup. The Preem will shoulder 111 pounds in the Cup provided that an apprentice rider is used. The Jennings entry of Roseborough and Hiya-Sailor are both well suited at this route. Roseborough appears to have the edge of the two, having been second in three starts this season. Hiya-Sailor was third on Wednesday afternoon at Pimlico in the Hilltop series. Galoot, an invader from Detroit, rounds out the field. Galoot is the lightweight, scheduled to carry 108 pounds and has not done too much this season. He did, however, win three races last year.
