« Correlation Staunch Jersey Choice Thirteen Named to Challenge Californian in 5 900 Race CORRELATION— Rules a strong choice in todays renewal of the Jersey Stakes, Full Flight, High Gun, War Of Roses and I GeeGee Chief Foes in Nine-Furlong Feature By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 28. — The largest throng of the spring season, probably in excess of 40,000, is expected to pass under the colonial arches here Saturday to witness Robert S. Lytles Correlation take on the challenge of 13 other sophomores in the thirteenth running of the mile and a furlong Jersey Stakes. The big. Californian must shoulder the maximum of 126 pounds, making concessions of from eight to 15 pounds to his rivals. Trainer Noble Threewitt has had the son of Free America here since last Sunday, and he has been training well and, appearing in excellent form since his arrival. Correlation will be shooting at a gross purse of 5,900, which is the prize if all acid their 00 to start. Immediately afterward he will be shipped to Belmont Park where, two weeks hence, he will engage his Preakness conqueror, and other former rivals in the Belmont Stakes. The Golden State powerhouse will be a prohibitive choice, probably odds-on, to leave here in triumph. He drew the No. 13 stall, which is not too fortunate in view of his well established tendency to lug in, but he will have the familiar presence of jockey Willie Shoemaker on his withers, who has now become accustomed to whatever whims Correlation might possess. Gaidar, Red Hannigan Aid Acquaintances E. M. OBriens Gaidar and Woodley Lane Farms Red Hannigan are the only two acquaintances of Correlation from the Preakness and the Kentucky Derby. Gaidar performed, in the Preakness and Red Hannigan in the Derby, but neither were prominent in* their efforts arid they are among the considered outsiders Saturday. Some new and prospectively tough opponents will be facing Correlation for the first time. Foremost of these are Brook-field Farms I Geegee, winner of a division of the Delaware Valley Handicap here, and W. C. Partees Winning Count, who was.. second to Timely Tip in the Arkansas Derby. King Ranchs High Gun, a runner-up in several of the spring fixtures; C. V. Whitneys Catspaw, who has gained .trophies when the big names were absent; Wheatley Stables Full Flight and Mrs. J. R. H. Thourons War of Roses are also given some chance to make an upset. Others in the field are Howard A. Jones For Free, Claiborne Farms Limelight, Joseph Gavegnanos Coastal Light, Charles Lawrences Opera Light and Hal Price Headleys Pinetum. Correlations accomplishments and setbacks are too well known to delve into very deeply here, but it is worth mention that he made his first impression in the East when last year he came steaming from behind with his late power and finished second to the ill-starred Turno-to in the inaugural running of The Garden State. Victorious in Florida Derby As every TV fan is well aware, this spring he has won the Florida Derby, beating Goyamo; captured the Wood Memorial over Fisherman, was sixth in the Kentucky Derby behind Determine and Hasty Road; turned the tables on Hasty Road in the Preakness Prep, and then was again defeated by the big Roman colt after a thrilling duel in the Preakness. Few fans outside of New Jersey, however, are aware of I Geegee and Winning Count! The former, a homebred colt by Brook- Continued on Page Ten Correlation Staunch Favorite Oyer Thirteen Jersey Rivals Continued from Page Three field— On the Double, by Sweep All, was very much the best overcoming a lack of racing room to win the six-furlong Delaware Valley in fast time. He has won his last four races in succession, one by seven lengths, and seems just to really be coming around to form. Although he has raced eight times, I Geegee was slow overcoming Jiis early greenness, and an overnight mile and a sixtenth Jriumph, here points him as being able to "get" the Jersey distance. Winning Count is a graduate of the; claiming ranks, but impressed Partee enough after a rough trip in the Arkansas Derby that he purchased him for 5,000. The son of Count Fleet and Bride Cake started just one time for his new owner, coming from behind like a whirlwind to finish second at six furlongs early in this meeting. He has ben training exceptionally well, and this morning "blew-out" three furlongs in :35%. Winning Count will be ridden by Antonio J. Fernandez, while no rider was named for I Geegee* Catspaw has won a pair of allowance events this year, both at middle distances, but was unsuccessful in the Gotham, Swift and Delaware Valley Stakes. FulTFlight, who finished behind Castpaw in their last encounter, has won two overnighters, was second in the Bahamas last winter, but was outrun in the Everglades and Experimental Free Handicap. High Gun has started five times this year, finishing second to Full Flight, third to Correlation and Fisherman in the Wood Memorial, second ot Palm Tree, third in the Withers, and fourth in the Delaware Valley here. War of Roses, an English-bred colt, was second to Porterhouse last year in the Christiana Stakes, and he beat Ring King ivinning a maiden sprint during the Florida season last winter. He was! outrun in the Swift, but easily won at a mile and a sixteenth over allowance company his last start. The weatherman, who has been wrong more than right during this meeting, predicts showers in this area on Saturday. Correlation is noted for his mud-running ability and will be an even shorter priced favorite if the track should be "off." None of his rivals are particularly noted for "off" track ability, but one who does move up tremendously is For Free.
