St. Louis Cards Lose Protest On Conflicting Calls by Umps CINCINNATI, Ohio, May 28 UP . — National League president Warren Giles, although admitting there were conflicting decisions by twov umpires on the disputed play, today disallowed the St. Louis Cardinals protest of their game against the Chicago Cubs on May 24. Manager Eddie Stanky of the Cardinals protested the game in the bottom of the fifth inning after Wally Moon hit a line drive with the bases loaded and one out. Umpire Hal Dixon at third signaled the drive a hit, but umpire Tom Gorman at second ruled that outfielder Ralph Kiner of the Cubs caught the ball at his shoetops. As Stanky, who had seen Dixons hit signal* waved two Cardinal runners on to the plate, Kiner threw to second base to double off catcher Del Rice and retire the side. Giles said his investigation disclosed that Dixon changed his hit signal as soon as he saw Gorman signals catch because Gorman was in a better position to see the play. "That Gormans decision should prevail is clear to this office," Giles said in disallowing the protest, adding there was no evidence that the disputed play would have changed the outcome of the game, which the Cubs won 6 to 2.
