Quick Lunch Successful Choice at Belmont Park Turns Back Buttevant by Neck As Peter Lane Finishes Third BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 28. — Charging straight down the middle of the long Belmont stcetch, Wheatley Stables Quick Lunch captured the featured Fair Harbor Purse by a neck over John Barry Ryans Buttevant, who bore out very badly through the final three-sixteenths. Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Peter Lane finished another length and a half in arrears after setting the early place in this three-quarters, while Allen H. Smiths By Jeepers was a length farther back. Mrs. Eugene Con-stantin, Jr.s We Wonder completed the small field and was unable to keep up. A solid favorite with the crowd of 19,247 that turned out in bright weather to watch a dull program, Quick Lunch paid .20 and was tele-timed a modest 1:12% over a dull track. Jess Higley rode the son of Blenheim H., who was scoring his first victory of the year on the sixth attempt. He won the Tremont, Wakefield and Albany Stakes in the course of a busy juvenile campaign of 16 races. By Jeepers was first out of the gate in the Fair Harbor, but Peter Lane was rushed up along the rail by Dave Gorman and took a slight lead, which he held to the three-furlong pole. Quick Lunch was close at hand on the outside, while Buttevant was several lengths farther back and We Wonder trailed. Curving for home, Quick Lunch took command, closely followed by By Jeepers and Peter Lane, while Buttevant began a strong bid on the outside. Inside the furlong pole, Peter Lane and By Jeepers both tired as though in need of a race, leaving Quick Lunch by himself, but Buttevant was in full sail, though bearing out badly. Higley continued to urge Quick Lunch with whip and hand and the big bay colt fought on gamely, while Buttevant continued to lose almost as much ground by bearing out as he was gaining in his determined move.
