Seven Three-Year-Olds In Holiday Purse Sprint Medina County, Sheiks Image Clash in Fairmount Offering By C. A. LINDEMAN Staff Correspondent FAIRMOUNT PARK, Collinsville, HI., May 28. — -Due to the fact that the original handicap scheduled for the Saturday card failed to fill, racing secretary J. J. Klucina, has substituted twin features for the nine-race card. Topping fche program will be the seventh race, named the Holiday Purse, which drew a seven-horse field to vie at six furlongs for a ,600 purse, and the cofeature, the McLeansboro, also at six furlongs, for a ,800 purse. The Holiday Purse is fashioned for three-year-olds exclusively that have not as yet won more than one race this year. Seven have been named to test their, speed and J. M. Burns Medina County, winner of an allowance affair at six furlongs last Saturday, rates the top spot. The son of Col. Teddy won in convincing style having a two and a quarter lengths advantage at the wire. The Burns speedster ran the six furlongs in 1:11, which is considered good over this track for three-year-olds. Competing against Medina County, the Holiday Purse will be such other speedy three-year-olds, Sheiks Image, a winner last time out in an allowance race by five lengths in 1:12%; Mint Branch from the stable of R. E. Young, who has started unsuccessfully twice at this meeting; Indiana Vi, Albee, Flitting Rod and Ritas Flyer. The co-featured McLeansboro Purse, which will appear as the eighth race on the nine-race program brings together another fleet field to compete at six furlongs for a ,800 purse. This event is for three-year-olds and older horses that started for a claiming price of ,500 or less and have not won three races. A field of nine will contest the issue and it appears as though the toughest competition lies between the three horses Ida Win, First Spin and Newton Airds, a newcomer to this track. Others that will be seen in action in the co-featured McLeansboro are Crosscut, Spizerink-tom, Beeston, Price-Is-Rite, Saracen Devil and Stepping Up. Harry-Lou accounted for the Maplewood Purse event, the main attraction on the Thursday night card of eight races, in impressive style when he defeated a flashy band of sprinters before a crowd of 6,000 patrons. The A. Schroeder eight-year-old son of Half Crown, ridden by R. Sanabria, was outrun in the early stages of the six-furlong dash, but, under urging rounding the stretch turn, was able to wear the leaders down entering the last furlong and, being best in the final stages won by a full length going away. Harry-Lou, well backed by the good mid-week night crowd, paid .60 to win and ran the six furlongs in 1:13% over a slow racing strip that was drenched the night before. The Schroeder sprinter is nominated for the Memorial Day Handicap and was sent out for an additional two furlongs, which he turned in the mile in 1:42. All Tilly, from the stable of Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Holman, showed a lot of speed in the Maplewood, setting the early pace and was still showing a lot of run in the last furlong, although no match for the winner. Deep Situation, a field horse, held on gamely in the final stages to take the show end of the feature. Red Rudolph, the favorite, finished fourth but was no serious threat at any stage of the race, apparently not favoring the going. Owner E. Meloncon shipped the four horses in his stable, Sorority, Tordar, Cajun Queen and Staggering In, to Lincoln Fields Thursday night. Walter Hoff elder sent the four-year-old, Try Ike, back to the North Shore Farm to be turned out. The horse went lame early this week. - John A. Ruberto checked in from Former Park, Nebr., with the two horses The Prophet and Benwood. A recent arrival from Wheeling Downs was the stable of Robert E. Byers with How Bouthat and Glinka. Ray O. Nickel checked in with the two horses Hada Keen and Hada Cake from Ohio. Trainer "W. E. Fling reports that the four-year-old filly, Fly Two Day, will be taken out Of training for a short period. The filly apparently wrenched a knee In her last outing.
