This flat mile drew a promised field of nine overnight, with Cain Hoys Flying Fury and Murcain Stables Jeans Joe generally expected to vie for the somewhat anxious honor of post favoritism. These two and Hasty House Farms rather moody Prince Noor share the highweight. each carrying 118 pounds, eight less than the Derby impost. A Well-Balanced Group They are to be opposed by Clifford Mooers Nabesna, W L Ranchs Honeys Alibi, Mrs. A. M. Creechs Styrunner and W. L. Lewis Jr. s Royal Mon, who must shoulder 112 pounds apiece. W. M. Peaveys Jett Flame at 110, with Brown Hotels Gemerica at 108 are the lightweight of the party. It is a well-balanced field and most of the expert in such matters expect that Jeans Joe, runner-up in the Blue Grass Stakes, will be the post favorite at about 8-to-5. The Derby Trials relevance to the "Run for the Roses" itself cannot be questioned and it has produced a victory for three colts destined to win the Downs classic, Citation, Hill Gail and Dark Star. It is a moot point if any of this field has such potentialities, but then nobody much foresaw Dark Stars promise in 53. when the astonishing son of Royal Gem II. won the Continued on Page Seven — = Derby Trial Gets Nine-Horse Field Jeans Joe Slight Choice Over Flying Fury, Prince Noor in Traditional Mile Continued from Page One Trial, then lasted to beat Native Dancer an exciting head in the Derby. Indications today were that, the weather would remain, clear and the going fast for the trial, which will be witnessed by the vanguard of Derby visitors currently jamming downtown hostelries despite the rail strikes. Many have motored or flown to this city, others detraining at New Albany, Ind., where they find chartered buses awaiting them. , Several of the aspirants for Derby Trial honors were on the Downs for final sharpeners on Sunday or ,this morning. Prince Noor today went over three furlongs in :38, and Jeans Joe stepped off the same distance in :36%. Mud, incidentally, would greatly enhance the Murcain colts chances, though he was attacking Racing Fool at the end of the nine furlongs Blue Grass Stakes in dry footing. The son of Nasrullah also was second to Swaps, winner of the rich Santa Anita Derby, who created such a flattering impression here on the week end. Useful Sunday Works J On Sunday morning the dockers caught Flying Fury and Honeys Alibi in useful mile drills. Flying Fury was timed in 1:42%. just breezing, after a quarter in :25%, half in :51 and six furlongs in 1:16%. Honeys Alibi went over the same ground handily in 1:39%. He got down to the quarter in :24%, the half in :49 flat and six furlongs 1 in 1:14%. He is a sort of "dark horse" of the California contingent. Jett Flame, also working Sunday, was timed five furlongs in a handy 1:00%. His fractions were :23% and :48. It was a useful move and one off which many horses could win races, though perhaps not Derby Trials. "Convertible Conn" McCreary, who is part buffoon and part jockey has been engaged to ride Flying Fury in both the Derby Trial and the Derby. Hank Moreno will" have the mount- on Racing Fool in the Derby. Flying Fury and McCreary are a compatible combination, in that both like to lay off the early pace, then finish with a thrust over the final quarter. Foreman Bart Sweeney of the Belair Stud forces indicated today that Nashua, the Derby favorite, will be worked a mile between 8:30 and 9 a. m. on Tuesday, probably galloping out an additional eighth. "Mr. Fitz," no longer a good shipper, phoned the training instructions last evening, and jockey Eddie Arcaro is expected to have the mount on the gladiatorial son of Nasrullah in his work.
