McGUIRE LAUREL, Md., May 2.— Rock Cottage, racing for the Thorncliff Farm of H. L. Donovan, turned in one of those exciting performances that saw him far outrun in the early stages, but-sweeping through the stretch on the outside to pass the entire field and earn a margin of a length and a half at the end of the mile and a sixteenth featured Tri-State Jewelers Association Purse here, today: The race having been4 won in spectacular style, the winner was forced to withstand a claim of foul lodged by jockey Willie Passmore who rode William Ewings Gal-2 lito into second place before his placing was confirmed. Four lengths back of the first two, Air Colonel was a tiring third after setting most of the pace while the favored One Throw, racing for Henry H. Hecht, was a disappointing fourth. Battle Wave was fifth and Magic Lamp brought up the rear of the field reduced to a half-dozen starters by. the withdrawal of Mr Skip. Passmores claim of foul was based on an incident in the stretch when the winner brushed Gallito in passing. If there was bumping it was minor and jockey Charles Clark, on Rock Cottage, made every effort to keep his mount clear. The victory was the third of -the afternoon for Clark who had ridden Intheswim in the first and Sup-. pressor in the second races to wrap up the Daily Double. Rock Cottage also supplied trainer James Arthur with a double as he had saddled his own Suppressor. , Ideal Racing Weather The final week of this meeting was ushered in under clear and warm conditions and saw 11,498 patrons on hand. Following running of the feature Mrs. David Lakeiri and Mrs/ Elizabeth Justis, representing the Jewelers Association, made a presentation. One Throw was hustled from-the starting gate but found a rival for command in Air Colonel who raced lapped on the outside. Heads apart this pair went to the half-mile marker where One Throw already displayed an inability to keep up and Air Colonel drew into a clear lead. Meanwhile the eventual winner had trailed the field a half-dozen lengths back of his nearest opponent, but on the final turn he had reduced, the advantage of those before him and when the last bend was reached he was sent to the outside for the drive. Closing boldly . Rock Cottage picked up his field quickly, but in passing his final obstacle, Gallito, he bore in slightly before drawing clear. Gallito did not give way easily after supplanting Air Colonel and the duel of the now leading pair found them opening the distance between them and the others.. Air Colonel was beaten when headed while the effort of One Throw was on the desultory side and he led home only the two who had not entered contention at any stage. Mrs. Henry A. Parr HI.s Small Coffee, who missed a close decision in her previous outing here, made amends in the six furlongs of the sixth race when she turned back six three-year-old rivals of her sex. Coming from closest to the pace of Almoy Stables Royal Indian, the winner subdued that opponent in the run through the stretch to establish an advantage of slightly more than two lengths at the end. Royal Indian weakened from her pacemaking efforts, and gave way in the final stride to Reddy Ro from the Barclay Stable.
