Massachusetts Attracts Top Handicap Runners Name Social Outcast, Helioscope, Joe Jones, Fisherman, High Gun By J. N. LYON Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS. East Boston, Mass., May 2. — The top five handicap stars of the nation appeared on the list of eligibles for the coming 0,000 added Massachusetts Handicap, as nominations for that mile and one-quarter test were released here today by racing secretary Gordon Morrow. Topping the list of candidates for one of the major events of the New England season is Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Social Outcast, one of the leading handicap stars of the country at this writing. Included in the roster are King Ranchs High Gun, voted top three-year-old of the nation last year; William G. Helis* Helioscope, C. V. Whitneys Fisherman and Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Joe Jones. Others in the star-studded array are Calumet Farms pair of Mark-Ye-Well and Fleet Bird, C. V. Whitneys Cold Command, Maine Chance Farms Jet Action and Black Metal, Brookmeade Stables Capea-dor, Clifford Mooers Cyclotron, and Mrs. E. D. Jacobs paper tiger. From the local contingent, nominations were received from Sam Tufanos Wise Margin, winner of the event last year, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Lingles Larry Ellis, T. P. Morgans Ezio, John S. Phipps Parnassus and Circle K Farms Mighty Ike. The 21st running of Suffolks biggest feature is no different than any of the previous renewals, for the event has always attracted the top names of the handicap division. In 1935, the initial running of the Massachusetts Cap, the great Top Row emerged victorious, and following that year such stars as Time Supply, Seabiscuit, Menow, Fighting Fox, Eight Thirty, War Relic, Whirlaway, Market Wise, First Fiddle, Pavot, Stymie, Beauchef , First Nighter, Cochise, One Hitter, To Market, Royal Vale, and Wise Margin have reached the winners circle.
