Pipe of Peace Triumphs Over Parnassus in Lowell Second Straight Tally at Suffolk For Venuti Brothers Colorbearer By JOE HIRSCH SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 2. — Bill Balzaretti took John and Patrick Veriutis Pipe of Peace off the early pace in the featured Lowell Purse today then hustled the five-year-old Amphitheatre gelding -thorugh the final sixteenth to hold John S. Phipps Parnassus safe, scoring by half a length. Three lengths-behind the favored Parnassus came Mrs. C. B. Fishbachs Fast Charger, who edged J. L. Friedmans Wabash Moon for the minor award. The victory was the second of the season for Pipe of Peace who returned 9.80. The winner also took his last outing here about 10 days ago and appears to be rounding into top form for his owners, Cambridge, Mass., restaurateurs. John Venuti recently received his trainers license and is now conditioning the family stable. A crowd of 13,090 turned out under warm, sunny spring skies and were quite strong in support of Parnassus, the War Admiral stallion. But Pipe of Peaces resolute finish sealed the latters fate in this one. The -winner was timed in 1:42% for the mile and 70 yards, an excellent showing. Fast charger set a stiff pace through much of the feature, responsible for the three-quarter clocking of 1:12. - Fast Charger was away first from the gate, dueling with Pipe of Peace to the clubhouse turn. Fast Charger showed the way into the backstretch as The Eagle came up to attend the leader, a head behind and Pipe of Peace settled into third position some three lengths back. Down the far side Fast Charger continued to lead, The Eagle now a half length in back and Pipe of Peace grimly stalking the pacemaker. Turning for home The Eagle took command and enjoyed a head advantage into the stretch, with Pipe of Peace still a length behind the runner-tip. With Parnassus on the inside driving for the wire, Balzaretti hustled Pipe of Peace down the middle of the strip past the tiring Fast Charger, got the lead with a sixteenth to go, and then held Parnassus safe in the closing strides of the race.
