Bugledrums Runs Second at Downs Odds-on Walmac Racer Has Length and Half Margin in Featured Lexington Purse By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 10. — Vagabond King, a close third in the Churchill Downs Handicap inaugural iday. carried Robert Mcllvains green and white silks to a popular victory here this showery afternoon in the Lexington Purse before a crowd of approximately 8,000 "regulars." The five-year-old homebred stallion, the get of Alibhai and Glass Slipper, responded to a hustling ride from jockey Arnold Kirkland and sped under the wiie with a length and one-half to spare over Sam E. Wilson, Jr.s hard-hitting Bugledrums. Slightly more than two lengths back, Hasty House Farms Ruhe was up for third while Buddah Stables Baby Tucky, one of the early leaders, lasted for fourth in the field of eight quick Lexington Purse rivals. Vagabond King, 118 pounds under the allowance terms, raced the six and one-half furlongs over the fast but slightly idull track in 1:19. Good winner of six of 13 engagements last year, the Walmac Farm stallion was backed down to 7-to-10 for his initial success of the 1955 campaign. Dominate Early Running Mrs. O. JS. Demings Warless and Baby Tucky dominated the running during the earlier furlongs while Kirkland steadied Vagabond King along in third position, within striking distance of the duelling pair. Approaching the home lane, Warless showed signs of having had enough and Vagabond King then began his victorious bid. Vagabond King put Baby Tucky away after passing the furlong pole, then continued courageously under brisk urging to repulse Bugledrums game but futile challenge. Bugledrums came from well back through the stretch in his good performance, while Ruhe, last at tht break, closed determinedly enough to nip the faltering Baby Tucky for minor honors. Jockey Lawrence Hangman was the riding star of the afternoon with three winners. He scored with Our Day, who paid .40 in the third; Joe Paglina, 8.60 in the fifth and Hokey Pokey, 0.20 in the seventh. Mrs. Kitty Niles and W. F. Kenna Reward, a Last Reward gelding, was under strong handling during the stretch run to beat Buddah Stables favored Princess Stell a half length in the six furlongs opener. E. A. Bischoffs Pvt. Sam raced evenly for third while L. H. Thompsons Ballista was along for fourth in the field of a dozen three-year-olds. Princess Stell might have reversed the decision over Kenna Reward had she kept to a straight course during the drive. The Buddah Stable filly bore in so badly in the last sixteenth that jockey Cook was unable -to do her justice. Kenna Reward, a homebred, was making his fourth appearance under silks and paid 3.60 straight after completing his trip in 1:13*5. Miss Tidwell. a Four Freedoms filly, was all out in the three-quarters mile second to beat H. H. Mundys Miss Pick by three parts of a length. A. P. Richards R. B. Run, choice in the band of 12 second year racers, finished third a length and one-Jo half back while James C. Ellis Skipping Tide saved fourth, Miss Tidwell. clocked in 1:14, returned 1.80. Clifford Lussky, prominent Louisville thoroughbred breeder, sent out the winner of the seven furlongs fourth, his homebred Spiriam, a son of Priam XL and Spirsilla, taking down the major portion of the purse by three and one -half lengths while under a good ride from Johnny Heckmann. Collier and Floyds Donna, a slow beginner, closed well for second and she was a head to the good of Froome Barbours Pick-Up Gal at the wire. Spiriam stepped along in 1:28 and the Lussky colt went to the post at 21 to 5.
