Baltimore. Md„ May 10— The Maryland Jockey Club launched its 18 -day spring session under cloudy skies here this afternoon, but everything was clear and rosy for owner Walter E. Crismer, trainer Jimmy Hector and jockey Carlos Gonzalez, combination which completed triples when Elberwhirl withstood a claim of foul after having accounted for the featured Baltimore Spring Handicap. Previous victors for the successful combine were Flotilla, a first-time starter in the two-year-old race, and Sea Admiral, winner over ,500 claimers in the fourth race. The opening day turnout of 10.103 was slightly better than that of last spring, and wagering showed a corresponding increase. Elberwhirl. a roguish four-year-old son of Whirlaway, was racing equipped with blinkers for the first time this year, which could have been the cause for him swerving to the outside slightly nearing the end. It was for this that Con Errico claimed foul after finishing second astride Mrs. Ada B. Eklofs Particolor. In third position was Eugene Constantin, Jr.s Bushers Beam, as the more highly regarded Hangover and Nick Jimmie finished among the also-rans. Elberwhirl returned 0.40, and his time of 1:05% for the five and one-half furlongs was just three-fifths of a second slower than Squared Aways track record. As was anticipated, the race was a speed test from the outset, with Duke Singer "s Hangover, Giles Mills Nick Jimmie and Elberwhirl racing for command along the backstretch. Elberwhirl failed to keep pace with his rivals and had to be eased out of his rail position. In taking off the top pair, Elberwhirl clipped the heels of Nick Jimmie, inflicting several cuts on that one. Hangover, without the opposition of Nick : Jimmie, drew clear to be a length and a t half in the van at the quarter pole. He » lacked the required staying powers, how- ever, and faded badly, as Particolor moved ■ to the fore. Elberwhirl again settled down 1 and set sail for the leader, joining him t from the inside. Elberwhirl had his head in front just t inside the sixteenth pole when he swerved i to the outside. Errico. astride Particolor, opined that Elberwhirl had bumped his 5 mount, but the pictures of the race evi-tc " dently revealed otherwise, for the stewards 5 allowed the original order of finish to stand. Old Glendale, a four-year-old gray son , of Cassis, who races for the Auburn Farm , of Thomas T. Mott, further stamped himself as a proficient turf course performer r when he lowered Pimlicos mile and one-0. - sixteenth standard to a sizzling 1:43% in 1 accounting for the secondary Elkridge ? Purse. Backed into .40 favoritism be-J . cause of his record shattering performance » at Laurel in his only other attempt at more I than sprint distances, Old Glendale merely toyed with his rivals today and had speed ■ in reserve while holding a four-length advantage - under Robert J. Martin at the finish. Behind Old Glendale, and soundly 7 beaten, was Samuel A. Pecks Potpourri, who had finished in the same position in 1 their Laurel meeting. Potpourri, like Shoe e String Stable "s Baroda Boy, who finished ■ third, is pointing for the mile and three 2 furlongs of the 5,000 added Dixie Handi- cap, which will be run on the grass for the ! first time this season. Old Glendale was not made eligible to the Dixie. Finishing fifth and next to last in the * Elkridge was Arnold Hangers Iceberg TJ. who was making his first start since his third behind Stan and Capeador in the Hialeah Turf Handicap during the winter. The seven-year-old Chilean -bred showed i no semblance of his top form and was s beaten about a half doaen lengths. He, too, K is in the Dixie.
