East Boston, Mass., May 10. — Herb Ehrlichs Lofty Legion con-1 tinued his climb up the class ladder with a driving victory in the featured Winchester Purse* here this afternoon. Claimed at Lin- coin Downs for ,000, he has won three straight for his new owner, the Boston restaurateur. A length and a half back of Lofty Legion was Queens Ranchs Lydia A., while J. McKays White Knight, who set the pace until midway of the stretch was only a neck back in third place. Favored by the majority in the crowd of 10.986, who turned out on a sunny and cool afternoon, Lofty Legion paid .40 and covered the mile and 70 yards in 1:42%. Paul Bohenko piloted Lofty Legion and, despite his running into a pocket just be-- fore reaching the far turn, managed to win convincingly with his mount. A four-j year-old brown son of Phalanx — Matter- horn, Lofty Legion won at claiming prices of ,750 and ,000 in his next two starts for his new owner and today moved into the allowance class. His score this after - noon marked the fourth in eight outings. White Knight was away in front at the start of the Winchester, with Poppy Day and Lydia A. Closest to him in the run to the first turn. Pusan was in slightly tight quarters going around the first turn, with Lofty Legion well back. White Knight con- tinued on the front end down the back- stretch, with Lydia now moving into sec- ond, replacing Poppy Day, and Lofty Legion continuing to make up ground from his rear post. Going to the far turn, Lofty Legion was unable to get through and Bohenko had to take him to the outside. I Once clear he continued to pass his rivals and at the head of the stretch had dead aim on White Knight and Lydia A. All three were under whip drives and, al-r ; though Lofty Legion showed a tendency to bear out in the stretch, he was well clear and in command of the situation. He drew out in the last sixteenth to win by a length and a half, as White Knight only suc-1 : cumbed to Lydia As rush in the final yards.
