The curtain-raiser had the fans on the edge when O. A. Coys Gay Purchase and Mike Turners Mr. Flares battled it out, head and head, and stride for strid?, through the stretch run with Gay Purchase eking out a neck decision over the Turner colorbearer. The winner was fancied by the majority of the patrons and returned .80. Rowdy Robert finished third, three lengths behind Mr. Flares. Apprentice Johnny Sellers was astride the winner. Referendum, flaunting the silks of Tom Guthrie, accounted for the second event. winning by three and one-quarter lengths in handy fashion and returned .20 to those who supported his chances. Fred Mc- Farlands Forever Agnes had to be content with the place award while G. M. Jame- sons Zonta Girl, who was beaten two and one-half lengths for second, showed four lengths to the fore of C. W. Straus Time- Sabu. Dr. Himmy, who was installed as the favorite in this event, turned in a dismal effort finishing fifth. The sixth race, the Peru, will headline the eight-race program here Wednesday and eleven speedballs will match strides in this six-furlong test for four-year-olds and upward. Wateree will flaunt the silks of Mrs. F. I Seremba in the feature, and should have little difficulty repeating her win of a few days ago. The track conditions will prob ably be termed slow, but tlvs should not hinder the chances of the Ecais Chance mare. She has been assignei 19 pcunds, the same package she toted btor recent victory. Cider, from the establishment cf Rodgers and Jameson, is a lightly raced f 11 y who has potentialities. She has been to the races four times this year and been in he money on three of those occasions. The good-looking daughter of Blue Pair got away from the gate sluggishly in her mst recent endeavor and was outrun throughout, but should she break alertly, msy be hard to overtake. Biddy Doyle, owned and conditioned by William Allan, rates consideraf.cn on the basis of her commendable performance when she finished third to G: mi-Twin and Shamrock Sal here last Saturday. The brown daughter of Blue Warrior was beaten less than a length and should improve off that race. She will carry 109 pounds, only one pound more than she carried in her last assignment. Opal S., the F. L. Grady crlor-bearer. cannot be overlooked as she is in splendid form. She finished second to In Form here last Friday while giving five pounds to her conqueror. The "off track" conditions should enhance her chances. Rounding out the field for the Peru are F. B. Berrys Temple Bar, A. V. Conniffs Oom Paul, H. Montgomery. J./s Jeffs Image, F.
