May 2. — There are many more valuable two-year-old filly events than is Churchill Downs 0,000 added Debutante Stakes of 5 furlongs. None will have so large an audience as this comparison piece of the turfs "Blue Riband" is assured. And if one may judge the future by the past statistics show this is a criterion 33 per cent of the time the Debutante could have a significance comparable to that of larger and longer races for the division. A total of 12 were-entered for this Debutante, making for a gross value of 4,175 and conspicuous among these are George Cavanaugh Jns Pine-crest Miss, John H. Clarks Heart Flush, Davis and Wilsons Pattys Choice and E. H. Mundys Blue Mam. Each has given enough promise she might eventually go to the post as the favorite with the huge crowd. Two Sons of Mameluke Perhaps the young Mahmoud sire Mameluke, who is of the immediate family of Equipoise, will provide the choice in either Blue Mam or Pattys Choice. Each has won four races in expanding careers, and when they met at Oaklawn Park, Pattys Choice prevailed over Blue Mam. Also commendable is the form of Pinecrest Miss, a winner here" opening day, and Heart Flush, who won one at Gulf stream, another at Keeneland. Rounding out the field are Leos Honey, . Sweep Hal, Dancing Doe, Pondering Eve, Borgia Bull, Grey "Haze,. Dainty Lady and Battle Heart. All but Leos Honey, Dainty Lady and Dancing Doe are maidens. If they all start, the winner will have earned a net of ,213.75. The Debutante has a romantic history that reaches back to 1895, and this will mark- its 58th running. In 1898 it was won by T. C. McDowells good filly Rush. Destined to win the Kentucky Oaks a year later. Other Oaks winners who sort of telegraphed their blows in the Debutante were Alcibiades in 1929, Blue Grass in 1946 and Bubbley in 1952. Alcibiades established one of our most valuable families upon retirement to the stud, and, in fact, Tim Tarn, of whom so many expect so much this week end, traces to her through Tom Fool and his sire Menow, who is out of Alcibiades. Another foundation dam who won the Debutante was Betty Derr, in 1930. She became the ancestress of the Derby winners Swaps and Iron Liege. In 1927, Mrs. John D. Hertz Anita Peabody won the Debutante and continued on to capture the Belmont Futurity. In 1920, it was won by the late Col. E. R. Bradleys grand stayer Bit of White and before that, in 1910, by W. G. "Bill" Yankes brilliant Round the World.
