Only Seven Loners Haye Won in 33 Years Wayne Wright Last to Triumph; Scored With Shut Out in 1942 CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 2.— In 33 years since the Kentucky Derby ceased to be run on opening day, only seven riders have come to Churchill Downs to ride in the event, made the race their only appearance, and have won. Four of the seven turned the trick between 1924 and 1930. Last jockey to ride only in the Derby and win was Wayne Wright, who was given the mount on Greentree Stables Shut Out in 1942 after Eddie Arcaro took the same stables Devil Diver as his first choice. Charley Kurtsinger made only one Appearance in silks at the 1937 meeting. He was astride the late Samuel D. Riddles War Admiral in the Derby. Three years earlier Mack Garner won with Brook-meade Stables Cavalcade, his only mount of the meeting. Earl Sandes third Kentucky Derby winner was Belair Studs Gallant Fox in 1930.-The first of Belairs three winners of the Louisville race was Sandes only mount at the session. In 1929 Linus "Pony" McAtee had only one mount, at the spring, meeting. That one was Clyde Van Dusen, the Derby winner. As a matter of fact, McAtee had never seen the son of Man o War until after he had dressed for the race and accompanied trainer Clyde Van Dusen to the saddling paddock. The trainer had made a point of going to the riders quarters to get McAtee. He wanted to prepare the jockey for the horse he was about to ride. "Now dont be discouraged by how small this horse is," Van Dusen told the rider, "hes little. But he can win this afternoon." Even with the words of caution, McAtee wasnt prepared for Clyde Van Dusens size, for the gelding was one of the smallest horses ever to wm the "Churchill Downs race. McAtee is the only rider to make a special trip to Louisville twice just to ride in the Derby, make his sole appearance each time in that race, and win on each occasion. He had previously come to Louisville to ride H. P. Whitneys Whiskery in the 1927 Derby, and he won. Bubbling Over, owned by Colonel E. R. Bradley, was jockey A. Johnsons only mount at Churchill Downs during the 1926 season. Johnson completes the list of seven whose sole appearance of the season came in the Derby. " A number of other riders have been at Louisville only on the day they won the Kentucky Derby. However, each of them appeared in competition in races preceding the "Run for the Roses." Jockeys who have accomplished this have been Arcaro, Conn McCreary. and Steve Brooks. Arcaro did it twice. In 1938 when he won the first of his five renewals of the Derby with Lawrin, Arcaro rode only on Derby Day. He was in Louisville only on Derby Day in 1945 to ride Hoop, Jr., but competed in earlier events on the program. Brooks came into town especially for the 1949 Derby. He, too, got the feel of the track in the early part of the afternoon, as did McCreary, who" flew down to have the mount on Count Turf in 1951. All other riders who have been astride winners of the Derby from 1924 through 1957 were in action at Louisville for one or more days prior to the classic. JOCKEY LOGAN BATCHELER — Hostile mount on Chance it Tony, the hope of the Mrs. Anna Cannuli stable.
