Two Families Have Triples In Famous Run for Roses LOUISVILLE, Ky.— Needles, in winning the f956 running of the Kentucky Derby completed the second family triple in the 83-year history of the race.- His sire, Ponder, had won the 1949 renewal, and his grandsire. Pensive won the Derby in 1944. The first family to "accomplish this consisted of Reigh Count, 1928, Count Fleet, 1943, and Count Turf, 1951.
