Hartack and Shoemaker, a man named Clarence Davison save a kid named Eddie Arcaro a leg up on a horse at the old ThistleDown track in Cleveland. Today at Churchill Downs, a man named Ivan Parke -will give this same Eddie Arcaro. note 42, a leg up on a horse named Jewels Reward in the 84th Kentucky Derby. In the intervening 27 years, George Edward Arcaro has ridden in over 20,000 iac.es. won over 4,000 of them, and his mounts have earned over 3,000,000. But Hore important than mere statistics, the same Arcaro has come to be synonymous xsitlfc everything that is great and good and colorful in the sport. In jockeys rooms throughout the country they refer to Eddie respectfully as "The Master." Coveted Souvenirs As: far as the Derby goes, Arcaro owns the record book. This is no idle accomplishment, for the Derby is the toughest race o£ them all to win, as underlined by the faet that 12 of Eddies 18 mounts went off as- favorites. Among his souvenirs, Arcaro has ridden six Preakness winners a record , seven Belmont Stakes winners a record, and is the only rider to capture the Triple Crown twice — with Whirlaway in 1941 and Citation in 1948.
