Mr. Fitz Saddled First Downs Winner in 191 1 Summer Night Scored on May 25 And Repeated Two Pays Later CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 2. — First winner saddled"~at Churchill Downs by "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons was his own Summer Night, with whom he won two races at the Louisville track in the spring of 1911. Summer Night was a five-year-old chestnut mare by Star Shoot out of Blue Mass. On May 25, eleventh day of that meeting, Summer Night won at 1 mile in a selling race for four-year-olds and upward. Ridden by jockey McCahey, she won*, by four lengths from .11 other starters in 1:41. Two days later tlie mare was run back in a selling race at Xz miles. With McCahey again the rider, Summer Night set a new track, record for the .14 furlongs being timed in 2:33. This clipped one and one-half seconds -off the track record which had been set by Spokane in winning the 1889 Kentucky Derby. In 1912 Fitzsimmons won four races at the Louisville course. Each time it was the sixth race, which was the fast race on the program in those days. The popular trainer did not saddle a winner again at Churchill Downs until 1930 when he sent outthe Kentucky Derby victor Gallant Fox. He has also won the Derby with Omaha and Johnstown.
