Derby Was Run Opening Day Prior to 1924 Meeting LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Prior to 1924 the Kentucky Derby was run on the opening day, of the Churchill Downs meetings That year the management decided to offer a prep race named the Derby Trial Purse. It was run preceding every Rerby except in the years 1926-28-32 and 33. In 1938 it was renamed the Derby Trial Stakes and has been run each year on the Tuesday preceding the Derby. . The Trial has produced, four Derby winners. Black Gold won the inaugural running of the Derby Trial Purse and went on £o win the big one. The others were Citation in 1948, Hill Gail in 1952 and Dark Star in 1953.
