ELEVEN IN ,000 ARKANSAS DERBY AT OAKLAWN Three-Year-Old Race Feature of Final Day of Meeting W. C. Reicherts Sir Midas Favored to Win, With Mrs. V. Wyses Entry of Eastport and Gallant Eagle Attracting Considerable Attention HOT SPRINGS, Ark., April 2. Eleven three-year-olds were named in the overnight entries for the second running of the ,000 added Arkansas Derby Saturday afternoon, and indications point to a thrilling contest when they meet over the mile and a furlong route. In addition to the ,000 added purse, the Oaklawn Jockey Club will present the owner of the victor with a silvery trophy, emblematic of the championship of the three-year-old ranks for the 1937 Hot Springs season. It is virtually certain that all I of the horses nominated for the final stake of the meeting will face the barrier, with Sir Midas, from the stable of W. C. Reichert, of Belleville, 111., ruling a slight favorite in the betting. Though Sir Midas failed to score an actual victory, being awarded one of his two starts on a disqualification, the bay son of Golden Guinea Sweet Yvette has proved without a doubt that he is well suited for the racing over a distance of ground and the mile and a furlong route of the Derby will enhance his chances considerably. EASTPORT WELL LIKED. However, Mrs. V. Wyses Eastport, which is coupled with Gallant Eagle in the interest of the Houston sportswoman, is certain to come in for considerable support from the speculatively inclined patrons. In his most recent start, Eastport finished second in the running of the Houston Handicap at Epsom Downs, in which ho engaged older rivals. Jockey Ray Hightshoe, who finished well up among the American jockeys in 1936 and who is under contract to Mrs. Wyse, came from Texas to guide the bay son of Swift and Sure. Indications point to the bulk of wagering being centered on Sir Midas and Mrs. Wyses entry, while Mrs. V. R. Hoppers Pharloch is regarded as the "dark horse" of the event and will draw some support on the strength of his performances at Santa Anita last winter. Pharloch started only one time during the Oaklawn meeting and encountered considerable bad raciflg luck during the stretch racing, but it is conceded that the son of Pharamond II. Latch Key will improve over that effort. PAUL RYANS DISTINCTION. Jockey Jimmy "Goggles" McCoy has been engaged to pilot the bay colt, being substituted for the stables rider, William Ray, who is suffering from a severe cold,, while Continued on thirty-second page. The remainder of the field consists of Miss Horton, Tetrashera, Mary Vito, Gallant Eagle and Mibs, which presents the most formidable array of three-year-olds to compete in the Arkansas Derby thus far. General manager Joseph E. Martin ol the Oaklawn Jockey Club is making preparations for the handling of the largest attendance since the revival of racing in the state, having received word that large delegations of racing fans from Memphis, Little Rock and several of the smaller towns in this vicinity are coming to Hot Springs for the climax of the racing season. Seven other attractive races and a substitute contest are included on the closing program.
