DAYTONIAN IN A THRILLER Carries Off Gasparilla Purse at Tropical Park After Hard Drive. Largest Crowd of Meeting for a Week Day Present for Seml-Final Program. CORAL GABLES, Fla., April 2. Revealing his best form after being away from the winners circle since early in February, Day-tonian, sporting the blue and gold racing silks of Mrs. W. R. Mizell, was winner of the fifth and featured Gasparilla Purse, at one mile, for three-year-olds that served as the bright and particular attraction for the semifinal day of the long meeting at Tropical Park. With a big crowd out for the entertainment, the unsexed son of Genie, opposed by five others of his own age, led the way virtually throughout the eight-furlong journey to accomplish his triumph, the second of eighteen starts this year, in a thrilling drive to register his success at the immediate expense of the heavily supported Mrs. W. T. Andersons Carlovinian. These two came to the end separated by one length while in a rousing finish for third. Debate, from the I. J. Collins stable, took the measure of Tonianna, which easily defeated Foxy Locksy. The unfortunate Star Loom was eliminated by the poor start that obtained. For the next to last day of the Florida season, the turnout was the greatest of the closing week. The thrilling entertainment of the afternoon, conducted under perfect conditions was responsible for much enthusiasm, while choices fared well. STAR LOOM AWAY BADLY. In the Gasparilla a few minutes was lost before the start obtained, and although Debate, Tonianna and Daytonian were away in good style, it found Carlovinian getting away rather shiftless, while Star Loom dwelt so badly that he was eliminated almost at once. Debate had the most speed to carry arpund the first elbow, but as the field straightened into the back lane Daytonian, under F. Maschek, was soon able to wrest command from the I. J. Collins gelding. These two continued to supply a smart pace as they led the field and all of this time Carlovinian was leading the unfortunate Star Loom and well behind the first four. Daytonian was behind a drive as he held the van position, but Debate tired slowly, while Tonianna was right in the fight and moved up with a stout challenge. Maschek, alert to the danger, sent his mount along at his best clip and it proved a smart move, as Carlovinian, weaving his way through in the last furlong, closed in with a tremendous rush to miss major honors after a gallant effort The test was run in 1-.Z8M with the winner paying his supporters better than 4 to 1. PLAYLINE VICTPRIOTJS. Eleven mediocre plater sprinters met for supremacy in the first race, at six furlongs, and. it developed into an interesting contest, with the result popular when Playline, from the Mrs. E. D. Jacobs barn emerged victorious in a thrilling finish. Ridden by apprentice A. Sciimidl and the light weight of those that met, the daughter of Mere Play came from behind to reach the end a neck before P. Andolinos Jackfull, while just a head back Little Dinah, closing with a belated rush on the inside of the pair, landed third as the others finished strung out. Outsiders took down the shares of the purse in the four furlongs sprint for two-year-olds that was the second offering In which Donna Leona, a first-time starter, from the Aeolian Stable, graduating in splen-. did style, when she drove up to a three-length victory. Eleven youngsters were under colors, with the bulk of support centering on Shred and Eastorian, but neither of the pair were capable of coping with the leading trio although the better fancied Shred was good enough to finish fourth as Moons Mission took the place by a head with Trap Nest third. Trainer George Alexandra saddled his tenth winner of the meeting for the Med-way Stable when he tightened the girth on Our Crest to have the improved four-year-old filly returned an easy winner of the third race, for which she was favored. Meeting contention from eight other shifty sprinters over the intermediate five and one-half furlongs distance, the daughter of Pharamond II. swept to an easy three lengths score over the Cosgrave Stables Blakeen, which was saddled by a brother, Bert; then came Mondorf, of the Mrs. E. Denemark barn, to hold command over the others. The combination of the Medway Stable, trainer George Alexandra and jockey A. Schmidl combined for another victory, the second of the day, when Narise, a sturdy daughter of Carlaris, proved best of a half dozen fillies and mares that met for honors In the mile of the fourth race. It marked the eleventh winner of the Medway Stable here and it was one of the most popular of the afternoon when Narise, making her first attempt, over a distanqe of ground, accomplished her purpose in a mild drive. Chasing along in pursuit of Many Moons for more than half the distance, the Medway miss supplanted the D, Stclsing filly at the last turn, after which she continued, in the van position to score by a length and . one-half . Miss Dignity was the one to reach the runner-up position, while third went to Be Big when he easily led home Goldspray and the ""two, others.
