DERBY CANDIDATE GERALD REACHES CHURCHILL DOWNS LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 2. New interest in the pre-season preparation of candidates for the Kentucky Derby was stirred up at Churchill Downs with the arrival late yesterday of one of the outstanding three-year-olds of winter racing, Mrs. W. H. Fursts Gerald. This son of Pharamond n. was shipped here from California to be trained especially for the Derby and is a certain, starter, barring the unforeseen, Gerald, trained by B. B. Williams, was bought early in the winter by Mrs. Furst from Anthony Pelleterl, New Orleans horseman, at a fancy figure and he justified his purchase price in the Santa Anita Derby event, though he failed to share in the prize money. In the race the colt encountered much adverse racing luck, particularly in that he had to lose ground the entire route. Many observers felt that had Gerald enjoyed better fortune, he. might have been much closer, if not actually the winner. The race was won by Fairy Hill and Gerald will get a chance to erase that defeat here for the William DuPont racer also has been nominated for the Churchill Downs fixture.
