MASTER LAD IN EASY STYLE Carries 120 Pounds to Victory in Main Race at Bowie Friday. Merrily On All the Way Biscayne Blue Graduates Another Large Crowd In Attendance. BOWIE, Md., April 2. Perfect weather prevailed again for the second afternoon of racing at this course, attracting a crowd of unusual proportions for an off day, with the turnover in the mutuels once more running high. There was no outstanding feature on the program, platers of the better grade appearing in the six furlongs dash intended as the principal attraction. Here Master Lad, whose best form has been shown in distance competition, made his first appearance since the November session at this track to prove the easiest winner of the day. W. E. Johnsons five-year-old packed top weight of 120 pounds, mainly in the person of Harry Richards, to be five lengths in front of My Surprise at the end, with the latter taking the place from Buster Boy by two lengths. The Star Master Lament gelding came in for smart support from his connections, showing .55 to in the mutuels. At that price he was second choice to the runner-up. The race was not much from a time standpoint when the winner finished out in 1:14. SLOW STARTING. My Surprise also left a trifle slowly but moved up fast after the first quarter. He had the speed to wear down the early leaders but was no match for the winner when the latter made his bid. Buster Boy broke on top but was dropped back abruptly to trail the field out of the back stretch. In the last three-sixteenths he finished with a rush along the rail, closing a big gap to gain third money. Scudder went along evenly all the way to be fourth, while Fight Talk and Lemont tired badly after battling head and head for half a mile. Biscayne Blue, a frequent disappointment as a juvenile last season, managed to escape from the maiden ranks in the six. furlongs dash for non-winners of his age, which was one of the afternoons better races. The gray son of St. James, running coupled with Late Day, was two lengths in front of Brief at the winning post with the latter leading Playnot by a length and a half. This marked the third successful favorite of the day, the entry showing "evens" in the machines. FIRST FOR JOCK WHITNEY. Grim Reaper, a son of Sickle and Blue Dust, in the extensive establishment maintained by Jock Whitney, scored the first of the eastern season for that sportsman when he raced to victory over nine other maiden Continued on thirtieth page. A length and a half awayi as. the brown youngster completed the distance in :48, was Smoke Signal, Manhasset Stable representative, taking the place by a four length margin from Alfred Vanderbilts Solarium. The runner-up was coupled with the winner, due to the fact that both are trained by Bill Norton. The entry was the first odds-on chance of the meeting at 3 to 4. Johnny Gilbert sent Grim Reaper to the front shortly after the start, and his charge quickly opened up on the pack to swing along undisturbed on the front end from the three and one-half furlong post to the stand. It was the fourth public appearance for the son of Sickle, and he ran as his California form suggested. Smoke Signal was not away as quickly as his companion, but Fallon hustled him into second place leaving the back stretch and he had no trouble holding this position. Solarium, away slowly and in tight quarters, finished with a nice burst of speed, though never threatening the two leaders. Araho Lass was pinched back shortly after the start and never recovered. The first three at the finish were all Santa Anita campaigners. HAPPY HOSTESS ROMPS. Happy Hostess, a filly which ran for 00 in her farewell to racing last December at Charles Town, came forth In the five and a half furlongs dash for Maryland-foaled three-year-olds to make a show of the five opposing her. The daughter of Happy Time and Princess K. left the post flying to jump into a long early lead. Never was she headed, galloping past the judges two lengths in front of the well-backed choice, Story Time. The latter saved the place by a length and a half from Trostar. The dash brought no casualty when Grey-Blossom was cut down badly going to the far turn. A plater from Hot Springs gave a Maryland boy his first winner of the meeting when Merrily Oh, with Ralph Eccard in the saddle, raced to a half length victory in the six furlongs claimer that was third on the card. The eight-year-ld son of John P. Grier and Queen Apple was pressed closely by Dona Dulcin, who took the place by a pair of lengths from the unfortunate Barn Stormer. Eccard had the veteran away rapidly and sent him right along to carry Queen Govans into defeat He had to use extreme pressure after disposing of that filly and at the end his charge was all out He was the second choiceof the day to register. H. Le Blanc, leading-apprentice in Florida, will arrive here Monday to ride. Jockey Eddie Arcaro will leave Tropical Park Saturday and report to trainer Bill Brennan of the Greentree Stable Monday. W. W. Butler, president of the Canadian Car and Foundry Company, of Montreal, accompanied by Mrs. Butler, were clubhouse visitors during the afternoon. Apprentice J. Ritz arrived from New Orleans and will ride during the meeting here.
