The Latonia Derby, which for more than half a century has been one of the prized fixtures of American racing, will be run for the fifty-fifth time when it is renewed with a brilliant field competing over a mile and a quarter here at the picturesque and famous Latonia course tomorrow afternoon. WAR ADMIRAL ABSENT. While the champion, War Admiral, superlative son of Man o War which took over the three-year-old crown when he raced to victory in the Kentucky Derby a little more than a month ago and since has defended it like one of the mightiest performers in a decade, is not here for tomorrows race, the field is one of the best the division has produced since the Derby at Churchill Downs. Heading an array of twelve colts and geldings named for tomorrows race is Reaping Reward, one of the topnotchers of last year and third to War Admiral and Pompoon at Louisville. He will be making his second start since the Kentucky Derby, having finished in front in his lone public appearance since the Downs classic and, with Military as a running companion under the colors of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars, Chicago-owned Milky Way Farm, is expected to rule favorite. In this important attempt to demonstrate that he may be second best to the champion War Admiral, Reaping Reward will encounter the flashy and possibly improved Over the Top, a former stablemate of War Admiral, now owned by Mrs. William H. Furst; John Hay Whitneys Withers Stakes hero, Flying Scot, lone eastern invader, which finished in front of Over the Top in Pimlicos Preakness Stakes, also won by War Admiral; Kentuckys ever-dangerous Dellor, owned by James W. Parrish; the two Texas threats, Emmerson F. Woodwards Eagle Pass and Waggoner-Brothers Heelfly, along with Californias Sunset Trail II., owned by Raoul Walsh, and four more Kentucky entries Ferguson and Herndons Josh, Hamilton C. Applegates Chigre, Lucas B. Combs Woodberry and E. A. Bischoffs Midas. GROSS VALUE 7,705. With the single exception of Flying Scot, which son of The Porter must take up a three-pound penalty for his earnings in the Withers Stakes, all of the contestants will shoulder imposts of 118 pounds each. Should none of these named overnight dodge the issue, the Derby will have a gross value of 7,705, the richest since 1931,- and ten starters would insure the owner of the winner the Continued on thirty-eighth page. LATONIA DERBY TODAY Continued from first page. largest purse since that year when Spanish Plays victory was worth 2,575 to owners Knebelkamp and Morris. Although the element of track conditions, vital to any turf contest, had not been established today, little if any trace of the mud that prevailed early this afternoon was expected to remain tomorrow. Warm weather, with clear skies and an enlarged force for working the racing strip would take care of that, said track . officials and horsemen familiar with the new live and rapid drying strip. . Basing their calculations on a fast, at the worst, a good track, horsemen and experts agreed that Reaping Reward, now possibly improved over his form of a month ago, would prove the one to beat, with Over the h Top, Eagle Pass, Flying Scot and Heelfly offering the strongest opposition to the Milky Way colts bid for his first Derby contest. They were not overlooking as possibilities Military and Dellor, especially dangerous, they warned, if the battle ground is not thoroughly dry, but conceded little, if any chance for any of the others to finish jn front, unless the race is to result in one of the biggest upsets of the year. ALL CANDIDATES READY. All of the leading candidates have come up to tomorrows engagement in fine fashion. Like Reaping Reward, the Furst and Woodward colts, Over the Top and Eagle Pass, qualified with sparkling public exhibitions at Washington Park, where Military finished a fast closing second to Over the Top in a mile meeeting test less than a week ago. And here at Latonia Heelfly has been unbeatable, causing his connections to feel that the son of Royal Ford may be better than he was for the Kentucky Derby, in which he forced the pace of the unconquerable War Admiral for about seven furlongs. With the arrival of this morning of Reaping Reward, Military and Sunset Trail H. from Washington Park, all of the Derby horses are on the grounds, their preparation at an end and some twenty-four hours of complete rest ahead for them before the parade to the post. The training of five of the principal contenders closed after they had indulged in short workouts over a muddy track this morning. They were Flying Scot, Eagle Pass, Dellor, Heelfly and Over the Top, the latter four going four furlongs each, while Flying Scot stepped off three-eighths. All worked in easy fashion, Flying Scot being timed in :36, while the others were caught as follows: Eagle Pass, :52; Dellor, :494i; Heelfly, :54, and Over the Top, :49.
