SUN SHINES ON LATONIA Weather, Crowd and Mutuel Handle Show Big Improvement. Jockey Earl Pool Scores First Victory Since Winter Season Astride Maiden, Queen Regnant. LATONIA, Ky., June 11. With a return of clear skies and balmy weather this afternoon, the largest and most representative gathering of racing devotees of the current season was in attendance, surpassing the attendance figures, as well as mutuel handle, of the corresponding day of the 1936 season by "a big margin, thus indicating a general improvement in conditions. Less than a third of the scheduled Latonia meeting has been completed and, with continuous improvement now quite probable, prospects are becoming brighter for one of the most successful seasons since the depression era, even in the halcyon days of racing in this section. The beginning of the season was slow, but gained momentum as the days rolled by. Though a heavy track prevailed for the presentation of this afternoons program of eight races, all of which were of the claiming order, some stellar thoroughbred sport resulted and met with the approval of the large gathering of enthusiasts. jockey Earl Pool, one of the oldest active riders on the North American continent in the point of service in the saddle, accounted for his first victory since the Winter racing season at Alamo Downs, when he guided R. L. Stivers Queen Regnant to the first victory of her career in the third race. The principal race of the days offering was the Erlanger Claiming Purse, occupying sixth place on the program, and consisting of a field of five contestants of the ,000 ranks.
