NARRAGANSETT OFFER 5,000 Will Increase Rhode Island Handicap Value If Stars Start. Both War Admiral and Seabiscuit Eligible for Stake to Be Run on Saturday, November 12. PAWTUCKET, R. I., Oct. 3. If War Admiral and Seabiscuit are ever to match strides there is every reason to believe that the fall meeting at Narragansett Park will provide both the time and the place. This opinion is influenced by the action taken by judge James E. Dooley this morning, after scanning the stake nominations for the fall meeting, which opens October 13, and runs through to November 12. War Admiral and Seabiscuit have both been nominated for the Autumn Handicap, a mile and one-sixteenth affair, with ,000 added, for three-year-olds and upward, scheduled for October 22, and the Rhode Island Handicap, closing day feature, November 12, over one mile and an eighth, with 0,000 added, for three-year-olds and upward. Inasmuch as the Narragansett management have never solicited the nomination of either horse, nor made any offers for a match race, judge Dooley feels that both Samuel Riddle and C. S. Howard have nominated for the very simple reason they intend to start their horses. In which case and with the definite specification that both horses start judge Dooley this morning announces that he will increase the added value of the Rhode Island Handicap, November 12, from 0,000 added to 5,000 added, the race to be run as a stake, with other contenders eligible and not as a match race. In keeping with his established policy, Continued on thirty-ninth page. NARRAGANSETT OFFER 5,000 Continued from first page. Judge Dooley is determined to avoid any ballyhoo of a match race between the illustrious turf stars. The Rhode Island Handicap has closed with enough high grade horses nominated to be a stellar attraction in its own right without either of the cracks, but if War Admiral and Seabiscuit are ever to meet, Narragansett in November seems to offer the right opportunity and, with a desire to set this tasty dish before New Englanders, Judge Dooley is hanging up the additional inducement. The decision to ship War Admiral and fifteen other Glen Riddle hoises to Gansett for the fall meet was announced by Mr. Riddle himself, following an unexpected visit to Pawtucket the day after the hurricane. War Admirals owner came to Gansett entirely unannounced. En route to Boston from New York, the New Haven train in which he was riding was derailed by the tidal wave at Stonington, Conn. Mr. Riddle and the other passengers were transferred to a bus and brought to Saybrook, where they were again transferred to a train and brought to Boston. UNANNOUNCED VISIT. Thursday afternoon the master of Glen Riddle picked his way unaccompanied through the debris that littered Gansetts "front yard." Making direct for the Administration Building he inquired for the racing secretary. Informed that Bob Shelley wasnt present, he told the surprised attendant that "he was just old Sam Riddle, owner of War Admiral." Publicity director Billy Ames chatted with Mr. Riddle and later brought him to judge Dooleys office. The outcome of a two hour social visit was the decision of Mr. Riddle to campaign War Admiral and fifteen other horses at the fall meeting. Trainer "Long George" Conway will accompany the Riddle string here and Jockey Wayne Wright will do the riding. The entry of Seabiscuit was -almost as much of a surprise. Stake blanks naming the C. S. Howard horse to the Autumn Handicap and the Rhode Island Handicap were received Saturday, just before the official closing time. Among other eligibles for the Rhode Island are Mrs. Parker Comings Thanksgiving, W. S. Kilmers Nedayr, D. A. Woods Busy K., Felix Spatolas Wise Prince, Ramsey and Coppages Mucho Gusto, two of E. E. Fogelsons "All Gray" stable, Gray Jack and Grey Count, and many others. Narragansetts fall stake have -filled beyond all expectations and should War Admiral and Seabiscuit accept the issme in the Rhode Island, it will close in a blaze of glory a meeting that appears ready to set up new racing records for the fall. The New Hampshire Racing Commission granted trainers licenses to W G. Mefiori and T. J. Kenwood.
