POSTAGE DUE BIG SURPRISE Wins Belgrade Claiming Stakes at Odds of 10 to 1. ; Favored Smart Crack, Unbeaten, Defeats Heretofore Undefeated Red Eye in Juvenile Dash. NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct. 3. The final meeting of the autumn season on Long Island was inaugurated at Jamaica today with Postage Due providing the principal surprise of the afternoon when he raced to a two lengths victory in the Belgrade Claiming Stakes, the principal monetary attraction. The one-time stake winner for Alfred Vanderbilt, who now campaigns for Bill Winfrey, was favored by a running start and this enabled him to hold the lead all the way. Wearing him down swiftly at the end was the public choice, Crossbow H., whose final furlong spurt had him a length and a half in front of Clocks at the end, with the latter just outlasting May R. for third money. The son of High Time arid Postage completed the journey in 1:12 to take down the ,525, which was the winners portion. It was his sixth score in ten 1938 chances and by far the most important of all. There was scant support for the gelded five-year-old and he went to the post at 10 to 1. Though the Belgrade was the stake race of the day, there was just as much interest in the six furlongs dash for juvenile fillies, where the unbeaten Smart Crack scored her fifth straight in whipping Red Eye, which also went into the race" with a clean slate. This was the afternoons most popular score, as the winner ruled choice at 9 to 10. START DECIDES RACE?. The start decided the Belgrade, for with a beginning less fortunate Postage Due would not have beaten either Crossbow H. or Clocks. However, Longden got him away winging from his outer position at the post and this enabled the son of High Time to turn back Clocks in the first quarter and draw away to a commanding lead. Never was he headed thereafter, but his pilot took no chances and hustled him right along through the final furlong. Crossbow II., away in a tangle, was badly outrun for the first half mile. Not until the stretch was reached did he settle to his best stride and then he closed with a mighty spurt to be going swiftest of all at the finish. It is probable he was best. Clocks broke alertly, but could not keep step with Postage Due during the initial four furlohgs. He made his bid once straightened away in the stretch, but it was a futile one and in the last sixteenth he tired badly. May R. was going fairly well at the end to be fourth. REMAINS UNBEATEN. Smart Crack, unbeaten daughter of Kiev and Wise Crack, which now races for T. P. Morgan, continued on her winning way as she galloped to another convincing victory in the six furlongs Enfilade Purse, th afternoons secondary attraction. At the end the gray miss was five lengths in advance of the weary pacemaker, Red Eye, which staggered home a "length and a half in front of Unerring. The victory marked the fifth straight for the one-time member of the W. T. "Fatty" Anderson stable, which was purchased by her present owner in late August for a price reported at 7,500. It was her second under the Texans silks. There was plenty of money for Smart Crack, which remained steady at 9 to 10 for practically the entire period of market operations, going to the post at that price. The score gave apprentice Yarberry, a recent star in New England, a double, as he had taken the opener with Mask and Wig. Red Eye did not have a single alibi. She stole a long early lead and exhibited fine speed for about five furlongs. In the last hundred yards she tired very badly. Unerring, making her first start since late July, turned in a good effort to be third. She was close up throughout and going fast at the end. Twist and Scandalous, the other two starters, were beaten off. Apprentice Yarberry brought home his third winner of the afternoon and completed a double for Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs when he scored with Rebel Yell at the end of the card. This one was one of the long shots of the field, and the favorite, Playback, ran .an exceedingly dull race.
