Thorp, a former all-America football player and Columbia coach, is as well known on the nations gridiron as in racing. He officiates at major college and pro games throughout the fall season, was the first eastern official to referee a Rose Bowl game and has umpired several Army-Navy games. OTHER POSTS. Besides being a steward for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, Nuckols recently was appointed in the same capacity for the coming winter meeting at Oriental Park, Cuba. He will serve in Cuba during the interval between the first and second Tropical Park meetings. Charles Cone, a cousin of Governor Fred Cone of Florida, represents the state in the stewards stand at both Tropical and Hialeah Parks. Swamped by an unprecedented number of applications, the Tropical Park stall com-j mittee met recently in New York and approved and allotted aU the available stalls, about 850. Since Hialeah and Tropical are within convenient vanning distance, it will be possible for horses stationed at the Miami Jockey Club course to race at Tropical and vice versa.
