STAGE BEAUTY AT LONG ODDS ,000 Worcester Handicap Falls to Rank Outsider. Attendance Curtailed by Army-Navy Game Feature Run in Record Time for Meeting. PAWTUCKET, R. I., Oct. 15 Mrs. P. A. Shaws Stage Beauty ran the greatest race of her career as she was whipped to victory a nose in advance of Yancey Christmas Rough Time in the six furlongs Worcester Handicap, ,000 added feature of a summerlike day of sport at Narragansett Park. It was a whip-lashing, thrilling finish. Probably the best horse in the race was Sanford Farms Sunport, which was backing up in the stall when "Buddy" Wingfield sent them away and he broke four lengths behind his field. Although he was unable to find running room down the back stretch, Sunport closed ground in the stretch, to finish just half a length off the battling leaders. That fact, however, should not detract from the great race that Stage Beauty ran. She was a despised outsider in the betting, appearing to be hopelessly outclassed and paid 5.60. She finished out in the fastest time of the meeting, time that was just three-fifths of a second off the track record, as she completed the six furlongs in 1:10, and she left behind her some of the nations fleetest sprinters. Gay Balko was fourth. Howard "Spike" Evans rode the winner and rode her well for the most part, although he almost lost the race by taking back Eiightly for a better position in the stretch. HOT AND SUNNY. The day was hot and sunny, but the crowd was not as large as the weather arid an excellent program warranted. This was largely due to the opposition of the Army-Harvard football game in Boston. j Rough Time had his usual early speed and took the lead at once in the handicap,, although he was unable to draw out, Gay Balko pegging the early pace closely. As they circled the turn, Gay Balko forged to a head lead over Rough Time and held it to the stretch, where he hung and backed up, Stage Beauty flying up to challenge. As they went to the sixteenth pole, Stage Beauty got her head in front, Evans, on the rail, eased back a bit, evidently with the intention of going to the outside, and Rough Time again showed on top. Evans, however, came through on the rail and past the sixteenth pole the leading pair were head and head. It was in the final seventy yards that Sunport finally found room, came charging with express speed on the extreme outside. Stage Beauty and Rough Time fought it out head and head right to the line and only the camera could separate them. A few yards farther and Sunport would have gone by both. Natty Boy made one menacing move on the turn and was done. Ronnie Nash continued his brilliant riding at this point as he piloted Story Time to a front-running victory in the - first event, drawing off from all rivals in the stretch to score an easy three-length victory -over the extreme outsider, Brilliant Rock. The race was marked by tragedy, Thornby breaking his left foreleg off at the knee in the stretch. The horse, was removed from the track in the ambulance and destroyed. STRONG BACKING. K. Kimbrells Salford, medium of a heavy last-minute speculation, led all the way in the six furlongs second event to win by two lengths over B. F. Listers Gala Star. L. J. Sandrocks Hastinola, coupled in the betting with Sir Michael and a warm favorite, finished third, the same margin back of the runner-up. Medius Dies was fourth. The winner in 1:12. R. A. Cowards Galadore, ridden by Ma- loney, charged up fast in the final eighth of a mile and drew off at the end to beat the favored Carbeck, from Sanford Stud Farms, by a length and a half in the three-quarters event that was third on the program. Mrs. S. A. Ketchells The Alamo, which set the early pace, was third, a neck in advance of Harp Weaver. The race was run in 1:12.
