1 HORSE COLONY AT DETROll 350 Thoroughbreds Now Registered V/ith Racing Secretary. Starter Bryan Steele to Start Schooling ot Horses Next Week— No Stake Offering on Opening Day. DETROIT, Mich., May 11.— Preparation! for the Detroit meeting, which opens- Satur* day, May 20, moved along at a fast clip to« day. With the opening of the racing secre* tarys office yesterday, horsemen lost no time in registering their charges. A check made this morning reveals there are more than 350 thoroughbreds quartered at the Fair; Grounds track. Heavy rains earlier in the week left the track in a muddy condition fori yesterdays training period, but today it wad fast returning to its best shape and manj horses were indulged in useful workouts. Bryan Steele, who will make his local de but as starter, has been here for several dayg and announced today that he would start schooling horses Monday. He will divide the5 program into two classes, older performer from 6 to 8 oclock and two-year-olds for aij hour afterward. Several leading stables coming from LouisW ville are due to arrive here the latter partj of the week. One of the first establishments coming from that point is the Glad Acrea Farm of R. B. George. It will comprise] twelve head and in addition to the many home-bred charges will include Prosy, whicbj won five straight races here last year Trainer Zoeller has notified Carter CurtisV general superintendent, that his horses would arrive here Saturday. An arrival on Sunday will be Ross Higdon with sixteen! horses. Higdon will bring several head for. the Woolford Farm, a half dozen for F. B« Koontz and the others race under the Higi don colors. NO STAKES ON OPENING DAY. There will be no stakes offering on operi* ing day, but on the following Saturday thS St. Clair Stakes will grace the program. Thd second week of the meeting will witness th$ renewal of the ,000 added Col. Alger Me* morial Handicap and the Belle Isle Handw cap. On June 10 the Motor City Handicap will be offered and then comes the Sallan1 Cup Handicap on the following Saturday, The Cadillac Handicap will top the program of Saturday, June 24, and on July 1 the Frontier Handicap will be the feature. Two stakes, the Moslem Temple Stakes and the Pontchartrain Stakes, will be run on the Fourth of July and on the following Saturday the feature will be the Liberty Handicap. The Mackinac Handicap will top the closing day program on Saturday, July 15. The St. Clair Stakes, the Sallan Cup Handicap and the Moslem Temple Stakes are for two-year-olds and the Pontchartrain Stakes is for three-year-olds. The other stakes are open to three-year-olds and upward.
