LINCOLN FIELDS OPENING CHICAGO SEASON MAY 25 ♦ Veteran Group of Officials Named to Supervise Sport at Crete » _ Thirty-Four Nominated for Crete Handicap, Feature of Inaugural Days Card — Judge Charles F. Price Serving Fifty-Third Year on Turf - * No track in the country can boast a more experienced group of officials than that which will serve at Lincoln Fields during the twenty-seven day meeting opening on Thursday, May 25. All of them have long been identified with the sport and Charles F. Price, who will occupy the stewards stand along with such astute racing figures as C. Bruce Head and Christopher J. FitzGerald, Sr., is in the midst of his fifty-third year on the •UI1noi udSe Price hag been officiating at the Crete track since its opening m 1926, and he is said to be the most well-versed man on racing rules in the country He gave up newspaper work when he was a young man to become identified with racing at Churchill Downs in Louisville and since has served dozens of tracks as an official. FitzGerald, who represents the Illinois Racing Commission, also is a former newspaper man who has devoted many years to racing since he gave up journalism, while Head, who also is general manager of Lincoln Fields, is a former breeder of thoroughbreds and has been connected with the turf for many years. PLACING JUDGES. The placing judges, all of whom have spent theic entire lives on the turf, are William H. Shelley, who also serves as racing secretary and handicapper; Harry B. Lindenberger, and Larry C. Bogenschutz, while the starter : is William Hamilton. I Others who will ser ve in official capacities at Lincoln Fields are James T. Clark and Dr. J. M. Kaiser, paddock judges; Thomas Young, track superintendent and clerk of course; Dr. G. B. McKillip, state veterinarian, and E. A. Wiedekamp, superintendent of mutuels. All the officials will be on hand early next week to assist in preparations for the opening. Thirty-four horses, many of them well known to Chicago racegoers, are eligible for the ,500 added Crete Handicap, six furlongs feature of the first days program at Lincoln Fields on Thursday, May 25. Some of the better-known thoroughbreds nominated for this stake, which first was run in 1926, are Tiger, The Fighter, Torchy, Corinto, Melodist, No Competition, Smart Crack, Kings Blue, Joe Schenck, Silverette, Chance Ray, Easy Mon, Gold Flag, Wise Fox, Floragina, Smart Trick and Employer. KINGS BLUE IN CRETE. Kings Blue, which races for John Marsch of Chicago, ran third in the Crete Handicap, behind Cross Bow II. and Preeminent last year and is almost certain to be a starter in this years renewal. He has been racing well at Churchill Downs and is due here early! next week with older horses trained by Ros-coe Goose. | Although Cross Bow n. is not in the Crete this year, his owner, Warren Wright, also of Chicago, has made Easy Mon eligible for the inaugural feature. Chance Ray won the Lincoln Handicap at Lincoln Fields and the Presidents Trophy at Hawthorne; Lightspur accounted for the Labor Day Handicap at Hawthorne; Smart Trick took both the Autumn and Juvenile Handicaps at Hawthorne; Dora May won the Washington Park Handicap, and Olney accounted for the Ravisloe Stakes at Washington Park. No Competition, owned by another Chi-cagoan, Mrs. Ethel V. Mars, turned in his best race in Chicago last summer when he finished second to Thingumabob in the Arlington Futurity. Besides No Competition, Mrs. Mars also nominated Tiger, Giles County and Up the Creek for the Crete to distinguish her as the. most liberal subscriber to this attractive sprint feature.
