DEMANDS U. S. INTERVENE PHILADELPHIA, Pa., May 16.— Federal intervention in the tense mine situation in Harlan County, Kentucky, was demanded today by John L. Lewis, leader of the United Mine Workers, whose new union shop contract was rejected by the Kentucky coal producers. Lewis charged in an address before CIO textile unions here that Gov. A. B. Chandler had ordered national guard troops into the coal fields out of vengeance because the United Mine Workers supported Senator Alben Barkley against him in the last election. *
