Delegate Delegate Seeking Seeking Repeat Repeat in in Steger; Steger; Johns Johns Joy Joy Has Has Six Six Frontier Frontier Rivals Rivals Sequence to Meet Fast Kinard Racer Combs Filly May Give Son Of Bull Dog Stern Battle In Sprint at Detroit Oval FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 27. The 5,000 Frontier Stakes, first important three-year-old event of the Michigan Racing Associations current meeting, is to have its decision here tomorrow and a small but select field of seven sophomores entered the six furlongs sprint. Headed by John Kinards crack colt, "Johns Joy and Brownell Combs homebred filly, Sequence, the Frontier undoubtedly will develop into one. of the better shorter distance offerings of the long Fair Grounds season. Under the allowance conditions of the stake, Johns Joy is to answer the bugle under 123 pounds while Sequence is to parade postward under 121 pounds. Completing the probable starting band for the rich feature are Hal Price Headleys Yes You, Henry Forrests Summond, Addison Stables Arise, Mrs. Moody Jolleys Mr. Jay, and T. F. Devereuxs Wirra. With the single exception of the filly, Wirra, who gets in the Frontier under 109 pounds, the remaining members of the field each will take up 114 pounds. Finished Unplaced in Derby Johns Joy, who made his last appearance under silks in the Diamond Jubilee running of the Kentucky Derby, undoubtedly will come in for the major share of support in the week-end headliner. Although the Kinard colt raced disappointingly after suffering interference in the Churchill Downs classic, he is rated one of the outstanding three-year-olds and his recent morning trials indicate that he is qute ready for his Frontier Stakes engagement. During his two-year-old campaign, Johns Joy, a well-conformed son of Bull Dog and My Auntie, made his first start a graduation trip, accounting for the Duncer F. Kenner Stakes at the New Orleans Fair Grounds. After he left the Crescent City, the Kinard star ran second at Louisville Continued on Page Two JOCKEY J. COM BEST Who was astride two winners on yesterdays Detroit program, will pilot Johns Joy in the Frontier Stakes at the Motor City today. Johns Joy Has Six Rivals in Frontier Sequence Ready to Give Son Of Bull Dog Stern Tussle In Sprint at Detroit Oyal Continued from Page One in an overnight event and then scored two victories, one at Detroit and the other at Arlington Park. In the latter dash, Johns Joy beat Ocean Drive, Commodore Lea and Blue Night, among others, then was unplaced in a roughly run Arlington Futurity, in which he had little opportunity to display his best form. Later in the 1948 season, Johns Joy won the Hawthorne Juvenile Handicap and the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes; the fleet son of Bull Dog also ran second, beaten but a neck by Olympia in the Breeders Futurity. Brought to the races at Keene-land this spring, Johns Joy finished second to Plumper in the Walmac Farm Handicap, in which the Headley horse set a new six and one-half furlongs track record. Johns Joy was only a head back in the Walmac, and then ran second to Halt, loser by a scant nose in the Blue Grass Stakes. Jimmy Combest is to ride Johns Joy in the Frontier tomorrow. While Johns Joy is the early choice for the Frontier, he may meet a tartar in Sequence, well-bred daughter of Count Fleet and Miss Dogwood, by Bull Dog. Shipped here last week from Keeneland, Sequence is under the supervision of the capable turfman, J. Price Sallee, and the "Combs miss startled workwatchers and dockers the other morning when she stepped six furlongs over a slow track in 1:14 quite handily. Sequence was lightly campaigned during her juvenile year, but won three of her five outings, the most important victory being achieved in Washington Parks Princess Pat Stakes. Displaying unusually fine speed in that three-quarters mile event, Sequence completed her trip in 1:10 and left such well-regarded fillies as Alsabs Day, Stole and Lithe in her wake. After her return to the Blue Grass sector, Sequence ran second to Ky. Colonel in an allowance sprint and then was good enough to finish fourth behind Olympia, Johns Joy and Fleeting Star in the Breeders Futurity Her Frontier engagement will be her initial 1949 and three-year-old outing. Won Stromboli in Drive Arise, a quick son of He Did and Cora-lie B., has compiled a splendid record thus far during a rather colorful campaign. Victor in two races at Jamaica last year, Arise also ran third in two important stakes engagements and he was recently shipped to the Fair Grounds after earning a driving victory in the Stromboli Handicap at Belmont Park. The Addison Stable colt stamped himself as a classy 1 sophomore when he beat such fine stock as W. G. Helis Danherst, F. W. Hoopers Ocean Drive, George D. Wideners Reveille, Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks Algasir, and Marabout, who raced coupled with Reveille in the Widener entry. Jockey Robert Watson, who hails from Aberdeen, Scotland, has been assigned the mount on Arise in the Frontier. Summond won three overnight handicaps at the Fair Grounds last season and has raced well this year, although he has failed to visit the winners ring. Mr. Jay beat Model Cadet at Arlington Park in 1948 and won a handicap at Tropical Park last December, Yes You has shown occasional flashes of class, while Wirra, beaten in the Royal Oak, may find the shorter distance of the Frontier more to her advantage. Chief supporting attraction on the half-holiday card is the Maidstone Purse, six furlongs for three-year-olds and older. Raymond Ankenbauers Porters Broom, who lost a close decision to Papa Redbird in the Curtain Up Handicap, is the favorite for the sprint, but he will meet some clever opposition in such quick entrants as Traveler, Cotton Joe, Ariel Ace, Syndicate and Touch Control, among others, in the 12-horse Maidstone field. ,
