Up Grade Gets Up for Neck Score Teddy Reigh Next To Moggio Mare Scurlocks Well-Judged Ride Winning Factor; Greytown Third in Lincoln Feature WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, HI., May 27. H. D. Maggios Up Grade, a six-year-old mare, who has been confining her activity to sprinting, found her hole card in the one mile sixth event here this afternoon and coming with a bristling charge in the late stages, she was up in the last stride or two o beat Teddy Reigh, owned by B. En-dovina and F. Alesia. Third in the spirited battle was K. O. Kepler and A. L. Eatons Greytown, who was seeking his fourth consecutive victory in this area. Up Grade had previously raced without success against ,000 company at this track, but against the ,500 claimers in the feature, she displayed tremendously improved form. Don Scurlock was in the saddle and he made his winning bid at the opportune time. Although there were no extremely fast times recorded, the-racing strip reached its best of the meeting, high winds of the last two days having thoroughly dried the strip. The weather was clear, but slightly on the chilly side and there was a crowd of 7,653 in the stands, as the field in the sixth went postward. Up Grade raced the mile in 1:38 and was mildly supported in the wide-open betting race, returning 2.40 to her supporters. Teddy Reigh, a gelding who had started only once previously in two years, was backed into favoritism and this confidence was well founded, for he showed the type of race that should cause him to improve greatly the next time under silks. Greytown Opens Up Lead Starter Ruby White sent the field away evenly, and Greytown, who was a bargain ,000 claim at Sportsmans Park, flashed to the front immediately. He opened a lead of a couple of lengths, and Jess Hig-ley then took him under a steadying hold. In back of him was Teddy Reigh, under double wraps and apparently ready to move on the leader at any time. This order was maintained around the turn, and into the stretch, where the fa-forites expected challenge materialized. He went to Greytown readily and the two battled stride for stride until an eighth of a mile from the line, where Up Grade, who had held a place in the middle of the pack, began to pick up momentum. Scurlock steered to the outside, where there was abundant room and in a few strides she was in the thick of the fight. Greytown was first to weaken, and this put Teddy Reigh on the lead, but in the last few jumps Up Grade forged to the front and appeared ready to draw clear as the winning post was reached. Her margin was a neck. Foxstep, owned by G. Ogren and V. J. Sovinski, was a game winner of the fifth, a three-quarters of a mile dash for ,000 platers. A sixteenth out it appeared that Blenette would get the big money, but Tony Skoronski refused to give up and, rousing his mount, pusher her across the line a nose in front. In the previous test, Time Lark survived and claim of foul after finishing to return 2.40. He was handled by Larry Grubb and came from well but of it to be a going-away victor. Flo Lassie, who finished second, appeared to be bothered through the stretch run, but it appeared "that she was a beaten horse at the time.
