Arb Scores Upset At Detroit Track Buhl Filly Hard Ridden to Lead Knights Gift Home By Half-Length Margin FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 27. Arb, a four-year-old filly racing under the silks of the local sportsman, Theodore D. Buhl, drove to a surprising victory here today in the Anchor Bay, one of the better offerings on a fair card. Hard ridden through the stretch by Tommy Fico, Arb reached the end of the six furlongs feature a half-length in advance of P. L. Grissoms favored Knights Gift, second by a head margin over Sniff Sniff, a representative of Mrs. E E. Dale Shaffer. In the closely contested finish E. A. Bischoffs Bold Lady took fourth money a neck off of Sniff Sniff. Lightly weighted under 102 pounds, one pound of which was overweight, Arb sprinted the three-quarters mile in 1:12 and overlooked in the wagering, returned his backers in the straight ote pool 1.20. Knights Gift, the choice, and Arb hooked up in a sharp duel immediately after the start and the pair entered the stretch closely lapped. Arb forced to the front during the drive and, although drifting out in the late stages, held Knights Gift safe while the latter was under severe pressure to withstand the fine closing bid of Sniff Sniff, who came from well back. Bold Lady gave a sharp effort to garner fourth money over other shifty sprinters meeting in the headliner. Weather Keeps Crowd Down Continued cold and cloudy weather again hampered the racing today here and a crowd of approximately 8,000 turned out for the sport, which was decided on a fast track. Sidney I. Crew sent out the winner of the fourth race, his homebred colt, Cross Wave, driving to a length triumph under Jimmie Combest, who was handling his second winner of the day. Cross Wave,, a son of Ocean Wave and Scared Cards, finished gamely under punishment to beat out Theodore D. Buhls Sweep Bolt, who fashioned the pace for the major portion of the five-furlong distance. Just a nose off Sweep Bolt, S. L. Kopalds favored Kopes Toy ran third in the field of nine two-year-old colts and geldings. Cross Wave carried 120 pounds in the dash and completed his task in 1:00. Lightly regarded in the speculation, the Crew colt rewarded his backers with 7.80 straight. Novice riders competted in the six-furlong opener and Verne Dinges, of Joliet, 111., piloted M. H. VanBergs Sons Twinkle to a neck decision over David Zakoors favored Sues Special. W. Zakoors Stickto me turned in a good performance to earn the show award a length and one-half back. Sues Special made the pace for the major portion of the trip but when Sons Twinkle was sent up on the inside for the stretch run the choice faltered and was unable to hold the aVnBerg mare safe. Sons Twinkle, third choice in the betting, paid 4 to 1 after he raced the three-quarters mile in 1:15. A. L. Birchs Leading Man, the favorite, raced to a front-running graduation verdict in the six-furlong second, which matched 10 ordinary platers. Leading Man, ridden by Jimmy Combest, assumed command soon after the break, but he was hard ridden through the stretch, to take a half-length victory over Mrs. C. O. Schweitzers fast-finishing Strolling Player. A length away, E. E. Pershalls What A Day held on willingly enough to garner the short end of the purse. Leading Man paid .80 straight and coupled with Sons Twinkle in the Daily Double, returned 1.40. Running time was 1:13. Mrs. R. E. Wingfields Dear Boots, homebred, daughter of Cohort andnd Catchem, romped to an easy 10-length victory in the fifth race at a mile and one-sixteenth. Taken to the front at the start by Tommy Fico, Dear Boots quickly established a long lead and she was not under pressure at any stage of the distance test, drawing away from her rivals in the stretch to win with speed in reverse. M. H. VanBergs Whata-nurse, away poorly, closed determinedly to earn the place award by a length before C. Freemans Wise Trick, third in the field of five three-year-old starters. Dear Boots won her second purse at the local oval in three starts and she paid .00 in the straight "tote" pool, after racing the distance in 1:46.
