Three Rings Victorious at Belmont Registers in Mile Pasteurized Purse Shows Way Home to Contest After Yankee Hill Rears at Start, Brown Mogul Sulks BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 27. Three Rings, who during the winter season, especially at Hialeah Park, chased after the jet-propelled Coaltown, found a much easier spot in the Pasteurized Purse today. Mrs. Evelyn L. Hopkins four-year-old, with Doug Dodson in the saddle, met and cleverly conquered four others whose equine feats are interesting, but not outstanding. At the end of the mile distance he led home King Ranchs Contest, while in third place was Danada Gift, racing for Mrs. Ada L. Rice. Yankee Hill, from the Sanford Farms, and Brown Mogul, owned by Joe W. Brown, rounded out the field. Yankee Hill was more or less eliminated when he reared at the start, while . Brown Mogul sulked and pulled himself up in the stretch run, although at the time he was thoroughly whipped. The five, in the best offering, left the starting stalls in quick fashion, but when the gates were loosed, Yankee Hill reared. This misfortune cost the Sanford racer some part of the purse, for he was rushed up fast after settling into his stride. This maneuver sapped his stamina and at the finish he was a tired horse. Dodson sent Three Rings into command, and this gelding was steadied along at an even clip. Yankee Hill was racing in nearest pursuit, while Brown Mogul was showing the way to Contest, with Danada Gift some four lengths back. Increases Lead There was no change in the positions to the far turn, where Three Rings increased his margin, as Yankee Hill began to drop back and Contest moved -up. At the stretch turn, Contest drifted out slightly, while Danada Gift was sent through on the inside. Through the late stages, Three Rings was holding to his task in convincing fashion, although Contest was gaining. The Mrs. Hopkins colorbearer was roused slightly when Dodson realized that the King Ranch representative was close, but Three Rings appeared to have a little left to maintain a length and one-half margin. Androcles, the widely heralded Greentree colt, he is a son of Amphitheatre and Courtly Manners, graduated at the first asking today in the Punch Bowl Purse. At the end of five furlongs, in a drive, he showed the way to Broken Arches, while Wily Willie was third. Eight started in this test and Androcles was supported with extreme confidence. He sped the distance down the Widener Course in one minute flat, facing a head wind.
