Capot in Speedy Mile Trial at Belmont Park Preakness Winner Timed Route In 1 :39; Chains Also Drills BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 27. Capot and, Chains were the outstanding performers during the training hours this morning. The Greentree three-year-old was tested over the mile course and. he galloped along in handy fashion to be timed in 1:39. The racing strip was in fast condition. Capot, who has the Preakness to his credit and also the runner-up post in the Derby, is being pointed for the Belmont Stakes, the mile and one-half feature of this meeting for three-year-olds. Capot, according to workwatchers, turned in an impressive effort and was timed for the first half mile in :48. He skimmed past the six-furlong marker in 1:12, and the mile in 1:39. In addition he was galloped out an additional furlong which he accomplished under stout restraint in :14, or 1:53 for the nine furlongs. Chains, who looms up as the main reliance of the Brookmeade Stable of Mrs. Dodge Sloane, was given his final test for the Suburban, mile and one-quarter feature of the Memorial Day program. Chains was accompanied part way by Inseparable, who is also a nominee, but appears overshadowed by his more successful stable-mate. Chains worked over the full distance of one and one-quarter miles and was timed in 2:08. Inseparable accompanied the four-year-old son of Firethorn and Handcuff for the first seven furlongs and then dropped from the picture. The fractions for this long test were :48, 1:14, 1:27, 1:40 and 1:54. The Widener course was thrown open this morning for juvenile exercise, but, due to the high wind and unseasonable cold, trainers were adverse to calling upon their charges. Training conditions at Jamaica and Aqueduct were off slightly, due to the cold and wind. Belmonts training track supplied its usual quota and. noted on that strip were some of the better campaigners stabled "on the hill."
