Equibit Registers Years First Tally Responds to Strong Urging By Permane in Drive to Whip Three Dots by Half Length GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 27. Responding to strong urging from jockey Bobbie Strange in the home stretch, Ella K. Brysons Equibit drove to a half-length victory over J. H. Rouses Three Dots today in the ,500 Stevens Purse, six-furlong feature under allowance conditions. Equibit, a four-year-old colt who was second to Winter Wheat at Pimlico in his only previous try this season, carried 113 pounds over six furlongs of last footing in 1:13. As second choice in the wagering with the crowd of about 12,000, he returned straight. Mrs. Andy Schuttingers Justice faltered in the drive after reaching contention in the upper stretch and finished third, six lengths off the runner-up. Grant Thorns favored Andy Handy, who was in tight quarters on the far side, was fourth, beaten two more lengths. He was followed by Ike Junior, Flying Weather and Greek Warrior, who again stopped after leading the way into the turn. Never Far Off Pace Equibit was never far off Greek Warriors pace. He raced on the inside, while Three Dots, ridden by Herb Lindberg, pressed the pace from the outside. When the William Helis gray stopped, Three Dots took over the pacemaking chore, but Equibit was close behind. In the drive, Equibit, running on the outside, caught the leader at the sixteenth pole and came out slightly in the drive. Todays Daily Double pay-off, trimmed a touch by a consolation pay-off, returned 5.50 to those who coupled W. I. Jones Grand Actress 2.60 winner of the opener, and Cedar Farms favored Unaided, who emerged from maiden three-year-old ranks in the second, to pay .60. The Consolation Double was occasioned when Mr. Number One, a first-time starter in the second dash, threw jockey Willie Gilbert and ran off. Those who had this one coupled with the first winner received 8.20.
