FERRIS FAIN — His charging in on bunts has earned the sobriquet of "Fearless Ferris." What They Say In the Dugout I By MILTON RICHMAN ! 1 United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, N. Y.f June 14.— Enemy batters call Ferris Fain, of the* Athletics "Fearless Ferris" because he charges in closer to the plate on attempted bunts than any first baseman in the league . . .Red Sox catcher Les Moss says he will never buy another automobile. The reason? Three serious accidents. . .Jackie Jensen, the Yankee outfielder who was an All-America fullback at the University of California, insists it takes a lot more brains to play big league baseball than it does to play big-time football. Some of your favorite ball players would prefer that you not vote for them to play in the All-Star game at Detroit, July 10. They would rather spend the three-day break with their families, instead. . .National League hitters maintain Giant rookie Willie Mays, covers more ground in the outfield than the speedier Sam Jethroe of the Braves. Brooklyn outfielder Gene Hermanski has warmed the bench so much- the past few seasons that whenever he is named to play, he says to teammates, "Hey, look fellas, I got a reprieve today!". . .Bill Veeck, ex-Cleveland president, who was the first to predict a brilliant future for Bob Lemon, says Don Lenhardt, the White Sox newly-acquired outfielder, will some day win the j home-run title and perhaps break Babe Ruths mark. . .Clint Hartung of the Giants likes jitterbug numbers but Ralph Kiner of the Pirates prefers to listen to hit tunes from Brodway shows... Big leaguers have a tough time convincing their sons to follow in their footsteps. "My kid wants to be -a doctor," groans Cincinnati catcher Bob Scheffing, while teammate Connie Ryan says, "Everytime I want to play catch with my son, he tells me hed rather go fishing." Second baseman George Stirnweiss of Cleveland doesnt chew snuff because he likes it but because he claims it relieves a painful sinus condition*. . Chico Mar-rero of Washington, Stubby Overmire of the Browns and manager Jimmy Dykes of the Athletics are the three champion cigar smokers in the* majors. Some American League pitchers still reserve comment on Mickey Mantles chances of becoming a top-flight star but a majority agree that teammate Gil McDougald will make the grade with * something to spare. . .Richie Ashburn of the Phillies, according to the grapevine, "legs out" more hits than any player in the league . Gus Bell of the Pirates resembles Dick Wakefield enough - to be his double . Stolen bases, a product they were once famous for, are virtually unknown among todays St. Louis Cardinals, who pilfered only three bases in their first 50 games. Tommy Gla-viano swiped two sacks and Billy Johnson the other one.
