Bunker Hill and Yankee Next Suffolk Fixtures Thirteen Nominations to Former; Sophomore Stake Has Thirty-Five SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 14.— The holiday spirit touched off by the gala Massachusetts Handicap day at Suffolk Downs yesterday, jgets a respite these next couple of days, then continues with "successive big days coming Saturday and Monday. On Saturday, the fifteenth running of the BunkervHill Handicap will be offered New England patrons, followed on Monday with the sixteenth edition of the traditional Yankee Handicap. While the Bunker Hill will attract only sprinters of the New England "regulars/ the richer Yankee is styled exclusively for sophomores and invaders are expected to .play an important role. Thirteen eligibles are in the six-furlong Bunker Hill and by post time Saturday it is expected that at least nine of that number will accept the issue. Topweighted Charleston from the barn of Phil Schwartz, accompanied by his less regarded stablemate, Norw.est arc being pointed for the Saturday feature. Charleston has been assigned 118 pounds, 13 more than his partner. J. W. Nizleks All At Once sis next in the weight line-up with 116 pounds, but must be considered a doubtful starter following his strenuous effort in the Massachusetts Handicap. Mrs. J. H. ~ Branhams Shadows Start, 114 pounds, qualified handsomely for the Bunker Hill in his race last Saturday and is expected to be one of the choices on Saturday. Another who must be given consideration in the Bunker-Hill is Murray Hill Farms Heres HubS. The Four Freedoms colt holds ithe distinction of turning in the fastest race of the meeting at three-quarters of a mile. That development came in his last start when he was timed in 1:10%. Heres •Hube will be obliged to carry 113 pounds. Dukes Gal, Scipio, Auntie, Peace Mission, Outland, Idio, Anns Step and Petey Cotter round out a representative eligible list for the Bunker Hill. Nominations for the Yankee closed on May .30 with 35 of the top sophomores in the East being made eligible. Since that time two, Brookmeade Stables Steadfast and Mrs. J. Kelleys I Trust have been declared. Naturally, J. J. Amiels Count Turf, winner of the Kentucky Derby, was given the top weight of the field, 130 pounds, but the Count Fleet colt has little or no chance of making the trek here from Belmont Park. Hampton Stables Alerted, New England-owned son of Bull Lea, is next on the weight list, being assigned 124 pounds. A recent statement issued from Delaware, scene of Alerteds last start, stated that the Chesapeake Stakes winner was slightly injured land would be shelved temporarily. The fact that Alerted is still eligible and the extent of his injury not determined, makes him a possibility in the Yankee. Tommy Mays Whirling Bat, stabled locally and training smartly for the Yankee, looms as the starting highweight of the gruelling mile and a quarter test. The son of Whirlaway, winner of the 1942 Massachusetts, is rated at lip pounds, the same weight assigned to Putnam Stables Combat Boots and A. H. Warners Loridale. Nothing has been heard from the connections of Combat Boots as to his Yankee status. Loridale, campaigned here since the beginning of the current meeting, but shipped to- New York on Monday for a successful engagement at Belmont Park yesterday, must be considered very doubtful. The son of Rustom Sirdar is also eligible for the Kent at Delaware Park on June 23 and gets in the latter event with 111 pounds. Among the. other eligibles for the Yankee, Joe Gavegnanos Joey Boy, 115 pounds; Ralph Lowes Pictus, 114 with stablemate Blentigo, 107; C; C. Boshamers King Clover, 109 and Carolina Queen, 107; Lazy F Ranchs Out Point, 108; Murlogg Farms Fighting Back, 108; Shangrila Stables Flic Flac, 106; Wilburton Farms Blue Roxy, 106 and G. Forgiones Dusty Demont, 100 pounds, loom as the potential starters on Monday.
