Pan Defeats Colonist In Gold Cup at Ascot Emile Constants Victor Gives France First Big Win of Year By VERNON MORGAN Reuters Racing Editor ASCOT PARK, Berkshire, England, June 14.— France won the historic Ascot Gold Cup today when Pan, by Atys — Pretty Girl, owned by Emile Constant, came with a great rush in the homestretch to rob Winston Churchills gray Colonist of the 8,-000 prize. Ridden by the French jockey, Roger Poincelet, and starting at 100 to 8, Pan caught Churchills horse halfway up the home straightaway and forged ahead to win by three lengths. Colonist, a 13 to 2 chance to beat the best fancied French horse, Baron Guy«tie Rothschilds Alizier, led that runner to the wire by two lengths. King Georges filly, Above Board, who was very heavily backed at the track today, starting at 6 to 1, was fourth of the 11 to take part in the stake. Churchill, smoking his customary cigar, was present to see his gallant gray make a determined bid for victory, but Pan gave the French their first big triumph of the year. The chief British hope, Cagire, who was the 3 to 1 favorite, faltered in the straightaway run and his pacesetter Harlech broke down. Colonist was always in the first flight with Pan in close attendance. At the halfway point, Churchills gray was in front and he still had the lead as the field rounded the bend with four furlongs to travel. He was then challenged by Pan, Alizier and Above Board. Momentarily, it seemed the Kings filly was going to find the necessary speed to take the prize, but she faded and it left Pan to catch and overtake the war-time Prime Ministers popular horse. The winners time for the two and one-half miles was 4:22%.
