UNITED PRESS — — — — -i NEWS I BRIEFS Reds Step Up Retreat TOKYO, Japan, June 14.— The Communists stepped up their retreat all along Koreas central and eastern fronts today after giving up Pyonggang, 29 miles north of the 38th Parallel. Even rear-guard resistance faded on an 85-mile front from. the Imjin River, above Seoul, to the East Coast. Only on the western front approaches to the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, 92 miles to the northwest, was the enemy holding fast. Johnson Testifies WASHINGTON, D. C, June 14.— Former Defense Secretary Louis Johnson said today that it was Secretary of State Dean Acheson who first*proposed American military intervention in Korea. Johnson also stated that American troops in Japan were "not equipped" to fight at the time they were ordered into action in Korea. Grady Sees Mossadegh TEHRAN, Iran, June 14.— TJ. S. Ambassador Henry F. Grady hurriedly conferred, with Premier Mohammed Mossadegh today amid fears that tribal riots might blow up the British-Iranian oil talks and create an international crisis. The American ambassador hastened to Mossadeghs home a few hours before six Iranian delegates and four Britons were scheduled to hold their first meeting on nationalization of the British-controlled Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. FDR; Jr., Backs Disarmament WASHINGTON, D. C, June 14.— Rep. tFranklin D. Roosevelt, Jr., D.-N. Y. proposed today a new foreign policy keyed to total disarmament and world-wide economic reconstruction and development. He introduced a resolution calling on the House and Senate to join in advocating a "policy of action" aimed at achieving "the universal desires of mankind." Approve De Valera Cabinet DUBLIN, Ireland, June 14. — Eamon De Valera regained his post as Premier of Ireland by a scant five votes, last night, and early today Parliament approved his new cabinet by a slightly wider margin. Strike Threat Lessened NEW YORK, N. Y., June 14.— Threat of a strike July 1 by 33,000 subway and bus workers was lessened today when the Transport Workers Union, CIO, agreed to "bargain in good faith and maintain uninterrupted service." The agreement, announced by Mayor Vincent Impellitteri, paved the way for peaceful settlement of the dispute which" has threatened to shut down the citys subways. Dulles, Morrison Confer LONDON, England, June 14.John Foster Dulles and British Foreign Secretary Herbert Morrison met today to put the finishing touches on a British-American draft of a peace treaty for Japan.
