American Stallion Relic Highly Popular in France Limited to 30 Mares This Season But Will Be Booked to 40 in 52 LEXINGTON, Ky., June 14.— Baron Fred dOsten, international racing and breeding authority who now makes his home in this city, received an interesting communication from the famous French breeder Francois Dupre. In September, 1950, Du-pre, on the advice of dOsten, purchased the stallion Relic from Circle M./Farm of Edward S. Moore, marking the first time in many years that an American stallion had been sold for export to France. Dupre writes: "With regards to Relic, he is certainly a beautiful looking horse and has met here with great success. We limited him to 30 mares at a fee of 300,000 francs and I dont think we will have any trouble to f ilTRis list next year at 40 mares. Many prominent breeders, including English and Italian, sent mares to him this year." Dupre, who operates the George V and Plaza -Athenee hotels in Paris and the Ritz-Carlton in. Montreal, conducts a large breeding establishment in Normandy. He is the -owner of Tantieme, a colt who led the two-year-olds in France in 1949 and who has distinguished himself since that time. Of this colt, Dupre writes: "Tantieme is going in the Festival of Britain Stakes, July 31, and the Arc de Triomphe on October 7. Each of these races is worth in the neighborhood of 00,000 and, whether I win them or not, I plan to retire Tantieme to the stud afterward." Relic is a six-year-old son of War Relic —Bridal Colors, by Black Toney and was bred by the Idle Hour Farm of the late Col. E. R. Bradley* His successes on the track included victories in The Hopeful, and the Hibiscus and the Bahamas handicaps. In mid-July the Calumet Farm leased the services of Whirlaway to Marcel Bous-sac of France for three years.
