J., June 14. — The starting field in Saturdays 0,000 Salvator Mile at Monmouth Park, opening-day feature of the summer racing season, is Tieginning to take concrete shape as inaugural afternoon approaches. A total of 38 fleet milers were named when nominations closed on June 1, but the nat- , ural hazards of the chase have reduced that line-up considerably1, and racing secretary John Turner, Jr., expects no more than 10 or 12 to face starter Eddie Blind. Included are such as the Al-Jo Stables ■ Cacique, an old-time Monmouth Parle favorite the Bedford Stables Call Oyer, Brookmeade Stables Chains, Carolyn K Stables Whiff enppof, H. W. Finchers Air Attack, J. Cavegnanos Pensava, M. Kahl-baums Risk-A-Whirl, J. L. McKnights •Mr. Buster, Mrs. Andy Schuttingers Ferd and the Woolford Farms Delegate. The majority of these are on the grounds; the others may van down from New, York or make the trip from Delaware. Of the group, the stakes-winning Ferd looms the early favorite, of the opening-day crowd. His recent races have all been good, and he holds scores this year in the Paumonok* Handicap at New York and the Valley Forge at Garden State Park. Other Possibilities There is a likelihood that outside competition may come from several others on the grounds, actively prepping for the seasons start. Mrs. James Carson *s Kinsman, S. Greenfelds High Trend, Mrs. Louis La-zares Sheilas Reward, the Savoy Stables team of Blue Speed and Top Admiral and -the Woodland Farms Overexposed are possibilities, fit and fast and rarin to go. The Salvator is the first of 15 added money stakes on the 1951 calendar at Monmouth Park, aggregating 00,000 in purses. To this amount will be added all nominating and starting fees, the. largest stakes distribution in the history pf the course.. As the shill notes of the bugle prepare to bring the iirst field along the paddock lane Saturday afternoon, training activities at the seaside track are accelerating. Early arrivals were given a short freshening up, but long, leisurely gallops have quickened into fast stepping workouts, and final "pipe opening" dashes~of three furlongs are all that remain to bring the horses to their peak. They will then be all set for the sixth modern-day meeting that extends all the way to next August 8, 46 days of sport.
