New England Notes SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 30. Jockey Dick DeStasio is contemplating retiring from riding, plans to purchase a few horses and start a new career as an owner-trainer. The veteran Billy Hinphy who won one division of the owners-trainers old-timers race on Massachusetts Handicap day two years ago, went back to booting yesterday to get into shape for the renewal of this gvent on the coming Massachusetts Handicap day, June 11. He went a half mile in : 50 on Bobs Pride. Apprentice rider John E. Smith, a Lowell youngster, rode his first winner Tuesday aboard Highest Star. Smith is a neighbor of Harold "Red" Keene and the nations leading rider is one of Smittys biggest boosters. Trainer J. J. Barker has taken first call on the services of the Chilean jockey Jorge Contreras for the remainder of .the Downs meeting. Agent Peter Carr has taken over the booking engagements for apprentice Robert Ussery.
