Frieze Carries Off Top Honors in Epsom Oaks Leads Zabara, American-Owned N Moon Star Home; Nineteen Start EPSOM DOWNS, Epsom, England, May 30 Reuters .The English-trained filly, Frieze, starting at 100 to 7, scored a comfortable win in the Epsom Oaks here today. This daughter of Phideas, ridden by the Australian jockey, Edgar Britt, won by three lengths from the One Thousand Guineas winner, Zabara, who started as second choice at 9 to 2, with William Woodwards Moon Start, a 9 to 1 chance, a length and half further away in third place in the field of 19 starters. Thus the home horses again routed the French as they did in the Derby. Marcel Boussacs Arbele, who started the 11 to 4 favorite, finished far up in the field after being prominent for a great part of the race. Frieze, a bay filly, is trained in Yorkshire by Capt. Charles Elsey and is owned by Capt. Alan Keith. Zabara is the property of Sir Malcolm McAlpine. Frieze always in the first flight from the start, took the lead as the field came down hill to Tattenham corner four furlongs out and was always going like a winner. The favorite Arbele was porminent at this stage but wilted in the straightaway. It was Jeft to Zabara and Moon Star o make their challenges on the outside and to follow Frieze home. Woodwards Hyperion filly looked like she would get closer at one time but produced no extra drive at the vital stage of the race. Jockey Harry Carr said of Moon Star: "I had a marvelous run at all stages but Moon Star didnt like the hard ground. On softer going, I think we would have won. Ground is my only excuse." Frieze covered the 12 furlongs in 2:35, which is three-fifths of a second better than required by the Derby winner, Tulyar. Her trainer, Captain Elsey won the Oaks three years ago with Musidora.
